The salt gatherers of Vietnam. Vietnam's salt flats (or salt fields) stretch across its long coastline, mainly in the central and southern regions like Hon Khoi Salt Fields near Nha Trang, Ninh Thuan, and Quang Ngai. Farmers flood shallow dirt or sand fields with seawater, letting the hot tropical sun evaporate the liquid over 7 to 10 days to harvest raw white sea salt crystals.
The collection is carried out frequently by women wearing traditional conical hats (non la) and face coverings. Rakes are used to gather the salt into large, glittering mounds before carrying heavy wicker baskets on their shoulders.
If you wish to travel to the salt fields, this is something that many tours do not do. If you absolutely must see this incredible activity, then we are well placed to organise this for you on one of our small group or private tours.
