✨ TEN INCREDIBLE FACTS ABOUT THE GREAT BARRIER REEF ✨
🐠 Visible from Space: It is the only living structure on the planet large enough to be seen from outer space.
🐠 Bigger than Several Countries: The Marine Park spans 344,400 square kilometres, making it larger than the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Holland combined.
🐠 A Massive Collection of Reefs: It is not a single, continuous structure but rather an intricate maze consisting of roughly 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands.
🐠 Prehistoric Survivors: The reef is home to ancient creatures; sea turtles have been roaming these waters since prehistoric times.
🐠 Home to 10% of the World’s Fish: It teems with life, hosting over 1,625 species of fish, including 136 varieties of sharks and rays.
🐠 Six of the Seven Sea Turtle Species: You can find green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, olive ridley, and flatback marine turtles living in these waters.
🐠 Corals Are Animals, Not Plants: While they form structures resembling plants, reef corals are actually made up of thousands of tiny animals called polyps.
🐠 Synchronized Spawning: Once a year, the reef stages an incredible, synchronized mass spawning event where corals release millions of eggs and s***m into the ocean, triggered by water temperatures and lunar cycles.
🐠 Vast Habitat Diversity: While iconic, actual coral reefs only make up about 7% of the Marine Park's total area. The rest is made up of seagrass meadows, deep oceanic waters, mangrove forests, and sandy/algal gardens.
🐠 Deeply Protected: In recognition of its massive biodiversity, it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 1981, the first coral reef ecosystem globally to receive the honour.
