SPAS

Kuta

Carla Spa in Poppies lane 2 – very cheap, girls lovely but I would just stick to massages here

KAYAN Spa – opposite Discovery Mall – lovely spa, bit more expensive but very clean and nice, we had pedicures here – 195,000, massages 150,000

We tried a couple in Poppies lane 1 but didn’t think much of them and can’t remember the name. We would ask to look in them first. Don’t be afraid to look. We didn’t use some of them because when I looked it either smelt, too hot or had flies.

Seminyak

Cool – had a pedicure here and didn’t think much of it. I would get a massage here. Lots of private rooms. 89,000 for a pedicure, 135,000 for a body massage

Nirvana – we had a pedicure here – no good 60,000, body massage 100,000. I would only go for a massage

AMO Spa – 5 star spa. I would get everything and anything here. More expensive but so worth it. Extremely clean and top service.

HEALTH
We avoided Bali belly by either good management or luck. We took over hand sanitiser and used it every time we got out of the shower (keep your mouth shut in the shower), after you washed your hands, before you eat, after you eat and when you have been shopping and handling money. Make sure you keep your fingers out of your mouth. Always use bottled water to brush and rinse your toothbrush. Ice is fine from most restaurants and clubs. Everyone buys in ice. Use straws when drinking out of bottles. I took raspberry cordial with me and Travelan tablets but only used them at the beginning of the trip. We picked nice looking restaurants. We also ate small amounts of salads but the fancier restaurants. We also were very careful in the pool, not to swallow the water.

MISC
Take a currency cheat sheet with you. I just googled currency cheat sheet and used the one from Amex I think. It was the best thing.
Smokes are only $1-2 per pack
Dog’s – in Bali u will see lots of dogs in the streets. We found this distressing at first but our driver explained they did belong to people. I don’t know how true it is but I would like to think they are. We are dog people so we found this hard. We also saw a dog get hit on the street but had to look away and walk off.
Kids – u could come across kids begging on the streets. We were told not to give them money as the money does not go to them; the money goes back to the bosses.
To buy watches – the ones in the stalls are fine but to get a bit better quality go to Bagus watches in Kuta Square. Near Rip Curl and Mata Hari. They also have fancy sunglasses some Tiffany and bvlgari jewellery.
You will need to pay departure tax when u leaves Bali at the airport. It is $150rp.
Don’t buy anything with banana leaves in it e.g. Photo albums. They will be taken off you at Customs in Australia.

MONEY
We averaged $100- 130 per person per day. We ate at restaurants for lunch and dinner. We ate at nice restaurants, u can eat cheaply if you want to but we kept to the nicer looking restaurants. We also had entrée, main and a desert. We would get a massage or two daily and do shopping. We also went on an elephant ride which was $65 US. We are not drinkers so we didn’t buy alcohol. U will mainly receive notes. U hardly see coins. The main notes we used were 100,000, 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 2000, 1000. We found the money easy to use and get used to in no time. We used the ATM’s over there. We stuck to the Mandiri ATM’s because they let u get 2.5 mill out as the Commonwealth Bank only allowed u to get 1.5 mill. We took Australian money over with us and exchanged. Our driver told us to stick to the exchange place that has a red and blue square sign that reads Mon EY EX change. U see them everywhere. They count the money out to you and then get u to count it on the bench. The exchange rate while we were there was averaging 9000 – 9125. Our driver who collected us from the airport (pre- arranged) told me not to change money at the airport, he stopped at one of those exchanges for us. We also found a lot of places took credit card. I will be getting a 28 degrees visa card for traveling in future. The banks take too many fees and 28 degrees take no overseas fees.

WEATHER
We went in Nov and we found the weather to be very hot. The humidity is extremely bad and we are from Brisbane so you would think we would be used to it. It is meant to be rainy season but we only had one night of rain but when it rains boy does it rain. Within seconds the street fills with water to over your ankles. You can’t see where u are going and it was night time just to add to the situation. Because I didn’t want to take off my thongs I slipped and fell in a hole. So if u are caught in bad rain take your thongs off. Carry a poncho with you. Next time I would take a face washer out with me to wipe the sweat off. I would pop in the fridge or freezer overnight and take it with you in a zip bag.

MARKETS/STALLS
Make sure you bargain for everything you buy. They will tell you a price 50-70% above what you should be paying. For board shorts we were paying 35,000 rp, black stripped/checker shorts 50,000rp, pack of 6 stubby holders 25,000rp, sunglasses 25-30,000rp, dresses 30,000 – 50,000rp, little kids clothing 25,000. If you want brand names such as Billabong and Rip Curl u need to ask the stall owners do they have Billabong and they normally have a pile hidden. Unless you are a size 12 borderline 14 you will not find much clothing that will fit. There are plenty of dresses you can buy but you will not find shorts and t-shirts to fit. My husband is a size 34 shorts in Australia and America but when in Bali he is a 36. In Poppies lane 2 there is a stall called Rama Shop. I don’t know how to explain to find it. Say you are coming from the beach end, it’s quite a distance up, it is on the left hand side, it is past Carla Spa, and it is run by 2 ladies. It is all fixed prices and very reasonable prices. We found them to have the best range of Billabong / Rip Curl etc. Poppies lane 2 is better for clothing. Poppies lane 1 is better for souvenir type things.

HOTEL SECURITY
They seem nice, they always want to help with getting you transport but we found they were negotiating high rates with taxi drivers. We got ripped off once and from then onwards we said no thankyou we are right and would never get them to arrange transport again. I am not sure if all security is like this. It happened to us once and from then onwards we didn’t trust any of them.
