Today we travelled to the Great South of the Grand Terre in New Caledonia with Toutazimut. The scenery was superb with contrasts between the blue river, red dirt and green shrubbery.

We had an interesting visit at the “ghost town” of Prony: a former mining and forestry camp – now only a few locals visit for a holiday, staying in the remaining buildings.

Then enjoyed a picnic lunch before hiking to a lovely waterfall: Chute de la Madeleine.

Today we visited Tjibaou Cultural Centre, and were taken on a tour of this facility by our wonderfully knowledgeable guide; Mai, who graciously answered all of my numerous questions.
The centre was designed by Italian
architect Renzo Piano and named after Jean-Marie Tjibaou. We learnt about the Kanak culture - indigenous culture of New Caledonia.

On Wednesday we visited L'Escapade Island, just a short 20 minute boat ride from Noumea - it is like a world away from the city. The overwater bungalows are exclusive and great for honeymooners. How wonderful to be able to snorkel over the reef with direct access from your room
