Some ask me why I like Asia, and my usual reply is why don't you like Asia? Just like the rest of the world, ancient history knows no bounds. When you have a local guide (which takes less time than a guidebook), there are things that you will marvel at and prompt thoughts like, how did they do that!!
But what happened to the country to change so much, it has not always been a brutal place. Cambodia lost its way in the 1960s and 1970s. Cold War conflicts spilled over its borders, destabilised a fragile neutrality, and led to a 1970 military coup. Ancient Cambodia—known as the Khmer Empire—was the dominant superpower of Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 15th centuries. At its peak, the empire covered modern-day Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and southern Vietnam. The vast capital city of Angkor was the largest pre-industrial urban settlement in human history. The art that remains inside thousands of stone temples decorated with intricate bas-reliefs detailing daily life and grand mythology.
