It's Serengeti Sunday

Most people think the Great Migration story starts with the calving season. Those in the know arrive earlier, while the plains are still quiet and the secret is still just that.

December brings the first rains, a carpet of green across Ndutu, and thousands of pregnant wildebeest gathering before calving begins. Predators are already out in force, the light is spectacular, and with fewer travellers around, it feels like your own private Serengeti.

Welcome to my fav city in Morocco, if you don't believe me... true story we almost bought a riad there some 20 years ago...

Here in Brisbane it's a toasty 31 degrees and I caught myself daydreaming of Fez, I get this warm fuzzy feeling. So I jotted down my thoughts on Fez and thought I should share it with you. Wherever you are, sit back with a drink and may you also start to get the Fez feels...

That tongue might look like the anaesthetic hasn’t quite worn off, but there’s a very clever reason for it.

A giraffe’s tongue can reach around 45–50 cm long and its dark blue-purple colour is thought to help protect it from sun exposure while it spends hours feeding.

And that impressive tongue is incredibly dexterous — designed to wrap around leaves and navigate thorny acacia branches.

Nature really did think of everything.

Mokolwane, Botswana. This one stayed with us.

There are safari camps that impress you the moment you arrive. And then there are those that quietly get under your skin.

Mokolwane is the latter.

It’s intimate, wonderfully wild and refreshingly unfussy. You’re deep in the Okavango Delta, surrounded by an extraordinary amount of wildlife, but there’s a simplicity to being here that we really loved.

No unnecessary bells and whistles. No trying too hard.

Just a beautiful little camp, great people, excellent guiding and that feeling of being completely immersed in the wild.

These are our Field Notes, the places we’ve actually been, the things we noticed while we were there, and the little details we think are worth knowing when we’re designing a safari.
