Australian tour interview on HEAVY with Ali Williams:

SHONEN KNIFE: Cutting Their Way Back From Osaka To ZED51
Forty-five years into SHONEN KNIFE, Naoko Yamano can still describe the band in three words: “pop, fun and punk.” It is remarkably efficient for a group whose history stretches from Osaka’s early-’80s underground to major-label releases, international festivals and enough world touring to make airport carpet a recurring feature of adult life. Australia has occupied a sizeable patch of that history. SHONEN KNIFE first toured here in 1997 and have returned repeatedly since, but their October visit is considerably more ambitious than a quick lap through the eastern capitals. The Lets Knife: Re-Cut Australia/NZ 2026 tour gives Naoko, Atsuko and Risa more than two weeks on Australian roads, two festival appearances, regional dates and several cities the band has never played before.

"In a world drowning in irony Lets Knife Re-Cut arrives like a neon lifesaver thrown from a punk rock speedboat. Shonen Knife reminds us all that rock can still be heartfelt silly and absolutely essential. Grab this one immediately crank it loud and prepare to smile until your face hurts because these songs were built to outlast every trend going." – (Jammerzine)

After near on FOUR decades of working like this... this is the only model I know. It has always had a sense of resistance to the corrupting side of late-capitalism, as much as finding legitimate ways to exist within the system we are given and have to navigate in our own way of function. The grassroots is where you smell the earth and work with a sense of togetherness - rather than corporate exploitation of resource (natural or cultural) and person just for monetary gain. Some attempt to work with substance in a symbiotic mode with a sense of creative awareness and community engagement. Encouraging to see.

TURNSTYLE
Perth cult favourites Turnstyle formed in 1995, spending more than three decades quietly building a devoted following through fuzzy guitars, spazzed out toy keyboards and catchy melodies, propelling a string of acclaimed releases including the single Spray Water On The Stereo and the album Turnstyle Country from 1999. The band released a further 5 albums since reforming with the original lineup in 2013. Long regarded as one of Australia's great underground indie-rock bands, they've shared stages with Teenage Fanclub, Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo, Superchunk, Grandaddy and, fittingly, Shonen Knife. Expect a set spanning the band's catalogue—from much-loved classics to recent inventions — one of Australia's true indie cult bands.
