Just finished the third pre run for this years apc rally happening 23 rd march 2026. It’s 3600 km and includes some amazing places and tracks. On this ride I tested the Motoz Gps rear tyre . In the past I have used the Motoz tractionator adventure which one of the guys with me used on a ktm 890.
The Motoz gps performed well and was tested with 3 days of wet weather. In short I could feel no difference with how either tyres performed in the wet . The gps tyre makes far less road noise and as you can see in the photo is wearing slower then the Motoz tractionator adventure. So if your wanting a tyre that can last 21 days of hard riding the Motoz gps tractionator is now my pick. I let it down to 24 psi for the wet days and it made the bike perform really well in the rain.

On my last ride I had to get help from Cf Moto Kempsey. They pulled a part of a new bike to keep me going which to me is the sign of a really good bike shop.
The young mechanic was the real deal and he was advising me that two customers had over 100,000 kms on their mt 800’s which is the same engine in the MTX. This was welcome news to me . I am heading out to do some more pre riding work for the next apc rally (advridingco) challenge which is in March 26.
My Mtx will have about 24,000 km after this ride . Its had no issues except user error where I damaged an ABS sensor changing a tyre like a Gumby. A low side on barry way which was simple fatigue.

I’m in Colombia at present and bikes are everywhere. The traffic is pretty wild. Everytime I travel it makes me think that a big V Twin for world travel is really not suitable. I have a few bikes and can I say that the Cf moto 450 is the most powerful bike that I would want in a country where the road rules are pretty loose .I know many have been surprised with their success but I think that the 450-500 cc twin cylinder motors could be where the future of adv riding goes. It’s such a shame that all the Dakar bikes except for Kove are not really available at an affordable price. I know people will tell me that the single cylinder 690 is the pick but I simply don’t enjoy the feel of a single on open dirt roads. Your thoughts!

Gps wiring is often a matter of compromise.
1. Staight to the battery is my first option because the gps stays on all day and prompts you to leave it on when you turn the ignition off.
This is important for track management or back tracking.
If your gps powers down it will create a new track file when you start up. This means that a days riding is cut into as many times as you stop which makes looking for old tracks really difficult.
A gps uses little power so it can stay on for 4 hours without your battery going flat.
A big tip is to go to settings in your gps and select record tracks daily. If you don’t it will keep one archive file which is impossible to manage.
On Garmin zumo xt2 and tread models they will actually show all old tracks on the screen.
It can get confusing so change the colour of your old tracks to light gray and your current track to magenta.
This way you can see where you have been on past rides if your current track has a problem.

Some weird stuff that I have learnt about the CF Moto 800 MTX after 23,0000 km.
1. It takes 300 ml of oil more than the manual says and the engine sounds better.
2. I have become addicted to cruise control.
3.Abs sensors spaced out by 5 mm (longer bolt and just put a nut on it to space it) No fault codes and no Abs or traction control ever again. Turn on bike and it’s in standard mode which is max power.
4. The sixth gear is a true overdrive that you only use on straight roads on a hwy.
5. This bike has converted me to tubeless . It is so good to see tyre pressures.
6. Clutch adjustment down at the gear box got tighter during the first 1000 km and hasn’t moved since. 2 mm free play is so important on this bike to avoid burning out the clutch.

My Bike Setup for GPS When Mapping Rides 🧭

When I’m out mapping routes, my GPS setup has to be dead simple and absolutely reliable.

The GPS is hard-mounted where I can see it whether I’m seated or standing. Tracks are pre-loaded, power is hardwired, and everything is secured so it can handle long days, corrugations, dust, rain — the lot.

When you’re mapping remote country, you’re not just riding for fun. You’re checking terrain, confirming access, recording accurate tracks, and making sure the route works for other riders. If your GPS or power setup fails, you’ve wasted a full day — or worse.

Keep it simple. Run proven gear.
Focus on the ride, not the tech.

🎥 PRE-ADV FEST 2026 — 6-DAY RIDE IN

I caught up with Kurt to talk through the 6-day Pre-ADV FEST ride for 2026.

We roll out August 16 and spend six solid days on proper ADV country before arriving back into Dorrigo on August 21 — rolling straight into ADV FEST 2026 (Aug 21–23).

This isn’t a sightseeing loop or a social cruise.
It’s a proper ride-in designed for riders who want to start ADV FEST the right way — already dusty.

I explain the route, the thinking behind it, and what riders should expect in the interview.

Have a watch. More details coming soon.

Just some vid from the weekend. really impressed with Dji action 5 camera and blue tooth mic that has a cool mounting clip with magnet. I superglued the magnet to inside my helmet and it can easily be removed to charge.
