Broken Creek Bush Camp, Benalla VIC had been on our radar for a long while & we were not disappointed when we stopped in for a relaxing 2 night stay on our way to Bright in the July school holidays.
This ripper of a bush camp is about 10km from Benalla and offers rustic, unpowered camping on a large private property. Camping is through self registration (currently $15 per adult a night). You choose your own spot and there is ample room for all size set ups and large groups. The friendly owner came by for a chat on our first night and gave us some great tips on what to see in the local area.
The communal spaces and facilities here are second to none. The camp kitchen building has full cooking facilities, a cosy lounge area with fireplace and TV, heaps of dining tables, book swap, a table tennis table & lawn games. There’s flushing toilets and showers available, with hot water heated by a donkey system.
Outside is just as good - a huge fire pit, tables, BBQ and pizza oven. We’ve heard that the stage gets put to good use on long weekends or for events. There’s lots to keep kids entertained and some fun things to spot around camp.
We parked up in a spot overlooking the dam which gave us good solar, even in the middle if winter with the low sun. Some other spots are quite shady, so keep that in mind. There’s a walking track across the damn which gives quick access to the sites on the way into camp.
There are plenty of ready made fire pits around (fires allowed seasonally). There’s also a shed with firewood available to purchase by the barrow-load or in bags.
The dump point here is a contender for the best in Australia. Undercover, sink with soap, access to a hose and water, plus a toilet and rubbish bin! There’s a solar powered light in case of a midnight dash to empty the loo 😉
