Garaan-ngaddim, Horizontal Falls

This incredible natural wonder is what’s known as a tidal pinch, where a large body of water is forced to squeeze through a narrow gap between two land formations, creating the "horizontal waterfall" effect we see.

In the story of the Dambimangari people, Garaan-ngaddim was created by the writhing body of the Woongudd woman, the spiritual snake.

The Batavia

The ill-fated voyage of the Batavia is one of Western Australia’s most infamous shipwreck stories.

Originally departing the Netherlands for present-day Jakarta to purchase spices, the Batavia carried around 340 people and was part of a fleet of eight ships.

In June 1629, around eight months into her voyage, the Batavia became caught in a storm and ran aground on Morning Reef near Beacon Island, off the coast of Western Australia.

But the story didn’t end with the wreck. What followed was a brutal mutiny that would become one of the darkest chapters in Australia’s maritime history, with only around 120 people ultimately surviving.

Today, some cannons, anchors and other remnants resting on the seafloor offer a glimpse into the story of this infamous wreck.

Water Lillies
These beautiful aquatic plants bloom between March and November, adding a splash of colour to the Kimberley's waterholes. Each flower can boast up to 400 vibrant yellow stamens, and several parts of the plant are edible, making them just as fascinating as they are beautiful.
