Birds of the Bunyas – King Parrots

The friendly, cheerful king parrots are an iconic Bunya Mountains feature and are a universal favourite at the Café, in the rainforest and on decks and verandahs all around the mountain. Known for their vibrant red heads and chests and green wings (the females have green heads), these iconic parrots can often be seen flashing through the trees in a blur of scarlet and green. You’ll hear their ringing, bell-like call everywhere around the mountain, which offers a unique opportunity to observe and appreciate these magnificent birds in their natural habitat.

Interacting with these birds is a highlight for many visitors, offering a chance to get up close and personal with these friendly and approachable birds. If you want to feed them, just make sure you choose the specially formulated bird food available at the General Store or Poppies on the Hill Café. They’re also a favourite for photographers, and you’re sure to get some captivating photos with these chattery subjects!

It may be cold up here, but that just makes the view – and the sunsets – even more amazing. Watching the sun go down from one of the many vantage points around the mountain is the perfect way to end a beautiful winter day at the Bunyas (just don’t forget to rug up!).
