Nestled at the foot of the majestic Burleigh Headland, Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre offers a profound connection to the rich Aboriginal heritage and culture of the Gold Coast. The centre is dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories, traditions, and practices of the Yugambeh language-speaking people, who have inhabited the region for thousands of years. Enjoy guided tours, Dreaming stories, live dance performances and art workshops. Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre is Aboriginal-owned and operated and is open from 9am – 4pm, Monday to Saturday and 9am - 1pm Sunday. Admission to the centre is free for all ages. Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre has been authorised and established by the Traditional Custodians of the Gold Coast and supported by parent organisation, Kalwun Development Corporation.

September is Biodiversity Month! 🍃 🐨 🐬 🌊 🦎

For more than 60,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have known that if we take care of Country, Country will take care of us.

This month is an important reminder that caring for, protecting, and respecting Country is everyone's responsibility.

Country supports our health and wellbeing, as well as our economy, so when Country is thriving, we can thrive too. Take some time this month to connect with and care for Country.

Whether it's as simple as picking up rubbish on your morning walk, reducing your waste and increasing your recycling, or joining a local guided tour to learn about Country and the species in your area, every action helps keep Country healthy.

We're back with another Mob Talk! 💬

Jellurgal has created this series to help everyone understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander slang and terms because it is an important step towards acknowledging and appreciating First Nations culture.

The next word we're going to break down is: Gammin'

It may look like a strange word but this is actually just another way that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people say "just joking", "not true" or "not serious".

This word is commonly used as verb to describe when someone is joking, teasing or exaggerating a story.

For example, if someone says, "A big croc was in my backyard this morning!", their friend might reply, "Nah, you're gammin'!".

So the next time you exaggerate a story or tell a joke you'll know what it means when your First Nations friend or colleague says, "You're gammin'!".
