Recently, our crew recovered an old Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) from the waters around Lady Musgrave Island. Rather than ending up as marine debris, this FAD will be sent back to Tangaroa Blue as part of Project ReCon.
Through the project, old FADs are refurbished with satellite tracking technology and redeployed with partners including Marine Parks, Traditional Owners and Border Force. If any of these partners come across an old ghost net, its location can be tracked, allowing the net to be found and removed before it causes further harm.
Ghost nets are one of the biggest threats to marine wildlife. Even after being lost or abandoned, they continue "ghost fishing", entangling and killing turtles, sharks, rays, fish and other marine animals.
It's pretty special to know that by recovering this old FAD, the team at Lady Musgrave Experience can play a small part in giving it a second life and helping remove deadly ghost nets from our oceans.
