The days are getting shorter, the evenings cooler, and winter is quietly settling across the Mid North.

Rug up warm, pack an afternoon tea picnic and a couple of camp chairs, and head out to Redbanks Conservation Park for an evening among the ancient landscape.

As the day fades, you might hear the birds singing their final songs and spot wildlife scurrying about as they settle in for the night. Then comes the magic moment, watching the setting sun light up the cliffs into a blazing red glow.

Afterwards, wander back into cozy Burra for a warm meal and a comfortable bed… or better yet, pitch a tent and spend the night beneath a sky full of stars.

And as always, keep an eye out for kangaroos on the drive home.

This month in 1979, the iconic Australian film Breaker Morant was being filmed right here in Burra!

Based on the true story of Harry “Breaker” Morant and the Boer War in South Africa, the film transformed Redruth Gaol into part of its dramatic movie set.

One of the most memorable scenes involved the gaol doors being blown off! Thankfully, the original historic doors were carefully removed beforehand and replaced with prop ones before any explosions took place!

And Breaker Morant isn’t the only production to find its way to the Mid North. Over the years, several films have used Burra and surrounding towns across the Goyder region as backdrops, including The Water Diviner starring Russell Crowe, The New Boy starring Cate Blanchett, and even scenes from Wolf Creek 2, which made the old Unicorn Brewery seem far more haunting than it really is...

But Redruth Gaol’s stories go far beyond the big screen. Over the years it served as a prison, later a girls’ reformatory, and today stands as one of Burra’s most fascinating heritage sites.

Want to explore these stories for yourself? Grab a Burra Heritage Passport, which unlocks access to 11 heritage sites across town, each with its own story waiting inside.

Planning a trip to the Flinders Ranges? Why not take the scenic route and turn the journey itself into part of the adventure.

Start in Eudunda, where you can grab lunch from one of the local bakery, cafés or pubs, there’s something to suit every taste. Stretch the legs, wander the town, and discover the stories and heritage that make Eudunda such a hidden gem of the Mid North.

From there, follow the iconic World’s End Highway and make a stop at Worlds End Reserve because honestly, telling people you visited “World’s End” is always a good story to bring home 😉

Then settle into Burra for a night or two and explore everything the town has to offer. Pop into the Burra & Goyder Visitor Information Centre to plan your stay, whether that’s unlocking history with the Heritage Passport, exploring museums and the gallery, wandering the ancient landscapes of Red Banks Conservation Park, or simply slowing down with good food and coffee.

Once you’re ready, continue north to the Flinders Ranges Visitor Information Centre and begin the next chapter of your journey.

Sometimes the best part of the trip is everything along the way.

As National Volunteer Week comes to a close, we want to shine a light on the wonderful volunteers here at the Burra & Goyder Visitor Information Centre

We are incredibly lucky to have a team of volunteers supporting not only us, but the wider community and the many visitors who walk through our doors each day.

They wear many hats… sometimes literally 😉
They answer questions, share stories, help visitors discover the region, keep us laughing, and somehow keep the whole place running smoothly at the same time.

Pictured here is the fabulous Jill Shannon, one of our wonderful volunteers. Originally from Victoria, Jill and her husband made the move to Burra, where she bravely decided to join the crazies at the Visitor Centre team, and we’re very glad she did!

To all our volunteers - past, present and future, thank you for being part of every visitor’s journey and helping make the Goyder region such a welcoming place to explore.

We simply couldn’t do it without you!

Winter is just around the corner...

It’s the perfect time to pack up the tents and head out into the Mid North for a cosy camping escape.

Picture this… a crackling campfire at Worlds End Reserve, marshmallows toasting, stories shared under a sky full of stars. Wake to mist drifting over the hills, then wander into town for a warm coffee and a slow start to the day.

Or perhaps the rugged beauty of Red Banks Conservation Park is more your style, red rugged landscapes, peaceful campsites, and that quiet winter stillness.

Simple moments, fresh air, and a little adventure, winter camping in our region has its own kind of magic.

So tell us… where will you be camping this winter?

It’s National Volunteer Week!

And for Burra and the wider Goyder region… that’s a pretty important week.

Our towns thrive because of volunteers. Behind so many of the places, events and experiences people love across the region are passionate locals quietly giving their time to make these communities special.

From the volunteers welcoming visitors at museums across, and, to those caring for gardens, preserving historic buildings, supporting emergency services, lighting up the towns at Christmas, running sporting clubs, organising events, and helping visitors at the Burra & Goyder Visitor Information Centres.... you are the heart of our communities.

You are many, and we appreciate every single one of you.

So this week, we simply want to say thank you.

And if you’re visiting the region, take the time to pop into our museums, galleries and community spaces, say hello, and support the wonderful volunteers who help keep the stories of our towns alive.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

While we’re celebrating History Month, a must-visit is the Eudunda Family Heritage Gallery.

This much-loved community space tells the story of the German settlers who began farming the district in the 1840s, with a collection built entirely from generous local donations.

Inside, you’ll find family histories, photographs, and fascinating displays showcasing early life in the region, from farming and railways to schools, churches and community life. The complex also includes Gosling’s Cottage, a restored 1880s home offering a glimpse into pioneer living.

Allow at least an hour to explore, and if you’re travelling with a group, guided tours and lunches can be arranged with prior booking.

A true local gem, and a wonderful way to connect with the stories that shaped Eudunda.

Open every Friday to Sunday, 11am - 2pm.

We’re bringing you another local favourite, a spot that truly lives up to its name.

Travelling along the World’s End Highway? Don’t worry… this isn’t where your journey ends, just where it gets a whole lot better!

Just outside Robertstown, you’ll find Inspiration Point, a scenic lookout known for its sweeping views across the Mid North landscape.

The name Inspiration Point comes from the incredible vantage it offers, a place where artists, travellers and locals alike have paused to take it all in, reflect, and feel inspired.

Even better? Pair it with a coffee from the Robertstown Community Centre and enjoy the simple things.

With fuel prices on the rise, it’s a great reminder that some of the best experiences are right here in our own backyard. If you are hiking along the Heysen trail or the Lavender federation trail, there is a great shelter at top with a spot to sleep of the ground.
