President Anura Kumara Disanayaka has directed the Government of Sri Lanka to provide US$ 1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal, following the devastating floods and landslides that have caused loss of life, displacement, and widespread destruction.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath conveyed Sri Lanka’s condolences and solidarity to his Nepalese counterpart, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal. The Government of Sri Lanka remains committed to supporting Nepal’s relief and recovery efforts. 🙏

Sri Lanka’s aviation sector marks a major milestone tomorrow, 25 August 2026, as Australia’s Jetstar Airways makes its inaugural landing at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). Launching the only direct low cost connection between Melbourne and Colombo, this non-stop route expands budget friendly travel across the Indian Ocean and marks Jetstar’s first ever footprint in South Asia.

Operating three times weekly every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday on modern Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, the new service will add over 100,000 annual seats between the two destinations. The outbound inaugural flight (JQ5) leaves Melbourne at 12:00 noon and touches down in Colombo at 5:50 p.m. local time, while the return leg (JQ6) departs BIA at 7:50 p.m. and arrives in Melbourne at 10:00 a.m. the following day. Local sales and commercial representation will be handled by Hayleys Aviation, serving as the official General Sales Agent (GSA) in Sri Lanka.
