Stronger First Nation engagement in Water Resources!

This announcement from Tanya Plibersek is welcome news. We are working on our Gimuy (Cairns) Indigenous-led Catchment Management Plan 2024, and it’s encouraging to see we will have the Federal Government’s support.

In partnership with Cairns Regional Council, JCU, OzFish, Alluvium, Gimuy Walubara Yidinji Elders Aboriginal Corporation, and Gimuy Rangers, we are embarking on a transformative collaboration. Together, we are developing community-led programs aimed at fostering positive change. These initiatives are designed to address critical issues such as enhancing water quality, safeguarding cultural heritage, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and ultimately, improving the overall livability of Cairns. This partnership signifies a significant step forward in our collective efforts to create a sustainable and thriving future for the region.

Here in the Gulf Savannah landscape managing vegetation with fire is critical. Using fire at the right time in the season, is our best tool to reduce wildfire risk and maintain healthy ecosystems. This season we have undertaken a series of burns to the north of the Talaroo Hot Springs and campground, and in our new bike track area to ensure our infrastructure and people continue to be protected. Big thanks to our team of Rangers Ashley, Thomas, Keenan, Des-Ziair, Ranger Coordinator Mark and Firecraft Environmental for the careful planning, preparation and successful undertaking of these burns last Saturday that also provide robust protection to the fire-sensitive and unique tea tree community of the Hot Springs. At Longitude 131 we were so pleased to welcome The Australian Art Correspondent Matthew Westwood to come and experience our Artists-in-Residence program, which we operate in partnership with the Ernabella Arts Community on the APY Lands. As part of the exchange, Matthew travelled to the remote Ernabella Arts community to see the studio and meet the artists in Country. The result is this beautiful story called Desert Stars, which ran in the Weekend Australian on June 24. There are three more dates for the artists’ visits this year:

July 17-21
September 18-22
November 20 – 24.
