Weekly Wonders of Ocean Free + Ocean Freedom 🪸

This week we feature the Moray Eel (Gymnothorax Javanicus). Looking a little intimidating with that toothy grin, the giant moray eel is actually one of the reef’s misunderstood residents 👀 Found tucked into coral crevices and bommies across the Great Barrier Reef, these eels spend much of their day peeking out from their hiding spots waiting for a meal to swim by.

And no,they’re not constantly angry 😅 That open mouth look is actually how moray eels breathe, pumping water over their gills while staying hidden in their reef home.

Big, mysterious, and a little misunderstood… the giant moray is proof the reef is full of weird and wonderful characters 💙

Why are we so passionate about our beautiful Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region?

Well, our Tropical North Queensland winters are a pretty good place to start! Think clear waters, warm sunshine, refreshing sea breezes, and the chance to sail straight out to paradise⛵️💙

If your idea of winter involves swapping jackets for snorkels, it might be time to step aboard Ocean Free and set sail for the stunning Green Island. From snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef to leisurely island strolls and that unbeatable feeling of wind in the sails, it’s a winter escape unlike any other.

And when the day is done? Take a short stroll along the waterfront, find a sea-view bar, and enjoy an ice-cold drink while watching the colours of a Cairns sunset light up the sky.🍹🌅

Winter adventures really don’t get much better than this.

Who’s ready for their next tropical winter escape? 👀☀️

Weekly Wonders of Ocean Free + Ocean Freedom 🪸

This week we feature the Razor Fish (Aeoliscus strigatus). Masters of disguise and movement, the razorfish is one of the reef’s more unusual little characters. Found hovering head-down among seagrass, sea urchin spines, and coral, these fish use their razor-thin bodies to stay hidden from predators 👀

But the coolest part? They don’t swim like most fish… instead, they glide in synchronised groups while staying upright (or technically upside down), making them one of the reef’s quirkiest movers.

Tiny, weird, and seriously cool, these guys are proof that on the Great Barrier Reef, it’s worth looking closely 🔍💙

👉 Swipe to watch how they swim!

Weekly Wonders of Ocean Free + Ocean Freedom 🪸

This week we feature the Threadfin Butterfly Fish (chaetodon auriga). Gliding over the reef, the threadfin butterflyfish is a familiar sight with its yellow back, fine diagonal lines, and that subtle trailing “thread” from the dorsal fin. It’s one of those fish you might see often, but there’s more going on than you’d think.

These butterflyfish spend their time picking at the reef, feeding on small invertebrates and coral polyps. You’ll often find them cruising slowly along coral edges or sandy patches, sometimes alone, sometimes in pairs.

That dark spot near the back isn’t just for looks either, it can help confuse predators by drawing attention away from the head. Small details like that show how well adapted these reef residents are to their environment.

✨ Keep an eye out for our next Weekly Wonders, and come spot these reef regulars for yourself on your next visit!

🐢 Today we’re celebrating World Turtle Day 🐢

A day dedicated to raising awareness for one of the ocean’s most loved (and oldest!) animals, and why protecting them matters. Sea turtles have been swimming our oceans for over 100 million years, helping keep marine ecosystems healthy, from maintaining seagrass meadows to supporting balanced reef environments.

Here on the Great Barrier Reef, we’re lucky enough to share the water with these incredible animals almost every day, and every encounter feels just as special as the last ✨

World Turtle Day is all about celebrating these ocean icons, learning more about them, and helping protect the habitats they call home so future generations can experience the magic too 🌊

Weekly Wonders of Ocean Free + Ocean Freedom 🪸

This week we feature the Spotted Sweetlip (Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides). One of the reef’s most interesting shape-shifters, as adults, they’re easy to recognise with their spotted bodies and calm, cruising behaviour around coral reefs and lagoons.

But it’s their younger stage that really stands out. Juvenile sweetlips look completely different, with bold patterns and a quirky swimming style, often seen wiggling their bodies as they move. This behaviour is thought to help them avoid predators by mimicking less appealing or even toxic species.

As they grow, they settle into a more relaxed lifestyle, often found in small groups near coral heads or over sandy patches. They feed on small invertebrates and play a part in keeping the reef ecosystem balanced.

Spotting both a juvenile and an adult on the same reef is a great reminder of how much life here changes over time and how every stage has its own role to play.

✨ Keep an eye out for our next Weekly Wonders, and come see these unique reef residents for yourself!
