Have you ever looked at a rock and thought, “How did that form?”
Every day in the Kimberley, you’ll find yourself asking questions as you walk through landscapes that challenge your perception of what’s normal...
Each area of the Kimberley has experienced different geological events that have shaped this coastline. The ancient rocks of the Kimberley formed over nearly 2 billion years from layers of sand, mud, and seabeds, as rising and falling sea levels slowly transformed them into sandstone, shale, and limestone. Massive tectonic forces lifted and folded the land, while volcanoes, wind, and rivers carved the dramatic gorges, cliffs, and domes seen today. The region’s famous red colour comes from iron in the rocks oxidising over millions of years, making the Kimberley one of the oldest and most spectacular landscapes on Earth.
