Trip Report 7th-10th May 2026 ⚓

This 3-day Cod Hole trip aboard Spirit of Freedom delivered relaxed Ribbon Reef diving despite strong wind warnings throughout the voyage. Protected conditions along the Ribbon Reefs meant guests enjoyed little current, good visibility and comfortable diving across all sites.

Highlights included green sea turtles, cuttlefish, Maori wrasse, grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks and nudibranchs at sites including Google Gardens, Coral Princess Bommie and Challenger Bay. At Cod Hole, divers encountered resident potato cod alongside Kuhls stingrays and moray eels.

The trip also featured some memorable personal moments, with Angie and Bryan celebrating their recent engagement and Jasper proposing to Jolien onboard, with a very happy yes. Bryan and Thomas completed their Nitrox certifications, while Francesca completed her Advanced Open Water course, rounding out a fun and memorable few days aboard Spirit of Freedom.

Trip Report 30th April - 7th May 2026 ⚓

This week aboard Spirit of Freedom delivered a full Ribbon Reefs and Coral Sea itinerary, with strong south-easterly winds throughout but rewarding diving and excellent marine life encounters across the trip. Diving began at Norman Reef, where guests encountered green sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks before moving north into the Ribbon Reefs. Sites including Pixie Pinnacle, Google Gardens and Challenger Bay produced barracuda, giant trevally, leopard sharks, Queensland groupers, grey reef sharks and bluespotted stingrays.

At Ribbon Reef 10, divers enjoyed devil rays and green sea turtles at Two Towers, while the famous Cod Hole delivered potato cod, a wobbegong shark and moray eels. Mid-trip dives at Coral Princess and Monolith continued the strong marine life sightings, including grey reef sharks and giant trevally.

Despite rougher sea conditions, the vessel successfully spent two days at Osprey Reef, where hammerhead sharks, silvertip sharks, grey reef sharks and schooling barracuda were seen across False Entrance, North Horn and Blue Marlin Wall.

The trip concluded at Ribbon Reef 3 with stonefish, wobbegong sharks and cuttlefish at Steve’s Bommie. Erwin Portillo also completed his Advanced Open Water certification during the voyage. With great shark action, vibrant reef life and a fun, diverse group onboard, it was a memorable week aboard Spirit of Freedom.
