Trip Report 8 - 15 October 2026 ⚓

This week aboard Spirit of Freedom brought sunny skies, calm seas and excellent visibility across the Ribbon Reefs and Coral Sea, providing fantastic diving conditions throughout both expeditions.

Highlights included green and hawksbill turtles, wobbegong sharks, cuttlefish, eagle rays, giant trevally and grey reef sharks. Cod Hole delivered its iconic potato cod feeding experience, while Google Gardens featured an impressive gathering of cuttlefish.

The Coral Sea expedition explored Osprey, Bougainville and Holmes Reefs, with standout encounters including a manta ray at False Entrance, a hammerhead shark at Corner Shop and the famous shark feed at North Horn.

Guests also celebrated Noel’s birthday, while Hayden completed his Enriched Air Diver certification with instructor Fernanda.

With favourable conditions, diverse marine life and memorable encounters across both expeditions, it was an exceptional week of diving.

Trip Report 1 -8 October 2026 ⚓

Spirit of Freedom delivered another successful expedition, with conditions steadily improving throughout the week and an impressive progression from the Ribbon Reefs into the Coral Sea. The Ribbon Reefs showcased exceptional biodiversity and plenty of fish spawning activity, with highlights including potato cod, turtles, grey reef sharks, bluespot stingrays, cuttlefish and the first signs of spawning at Cod Hole.

From Sunday onwards, improving weather allowed the trip to complete a Coral Sea trifecta, visiting Osprey Reef, Bougainville Reef and Holmes Reef across three days. Guests encountered silvertip sharks, grey reef sharks, leopard sharks, a tiger shark, dogtooth tuna, bumphead parrotfish, potato cod, eagle rays and hawksbill turtles, with visibility reaching more than 30 metres at several sites.

The trip also included special celebrations, with Ben and Lucy enjoying their honeymoon, four guests completing their Nitrox course and David and Lily celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary aboard Spirit of Freedom.

Trip Report 24 Sep - 1 Oct 2026 ⚓

This trip aboard Spirit of Freedom brought sunny conditions, good visibility and plenty of marine life across the Ribbon Reefs, although increasing south easterly winds made for a rougher trip.

Highlights included green sea turtles, cuttlefish, schooling bigeye trevally, grey reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish, octopus and whitetip reef sharks. Cod Hole delivered resident potato cod, while Steve’s Bommie produced stonefish and further reef life.

With the stronger winds keeping the Coral Sea off the itinerary, the trip focused on exploring the Ribbon Reefs. Guests also celebrated Karen’s birthday and Anna’s 200th dive, while Dylan and Austyn completed their Advanced Open Water courses.

Despite the challenging surface conditions, good visibility, favourable currents and diverse marine life made for a rewarding week.
