It's been a big week in the diving world.
Over in the Maldives, the dive community was saddened after a tragic cave diving incident involving a group of experienced divers. The accident has sparked fresh conversations around dive safety, training, and the extra risks that come with technical diving. While rare, events like this are a reminder that even the most experienced divers never stop learning underwater.
On a brighter note, divers looking for somewhere new to explore now have even more reason to pack their fins. India’s Andaman Islands have officially opened several brand-new dive sites, with reports of crystal-clear water, healthy coral gardens, and plenty of marine life already attracting attention from travelling divers.
Back here in Far North Queensland, Cairns is gearing up for another huge tourism season as the cooler dry-season weather rolls in. Reef operators are reporting strong bookings, especially for Great Barrier Reef trips, liveaboards, and snorkel tours. There’s also plenty of excitement around new eco-tourism experiences and continued investment into reef conservation projects, helping protect the very thing visitors come to see.
After a few years of unpredictable travel trends, confidence in tropical tourism seems to be well and truly back — and for Cairns, that’s great news for local operators, tourism businesses, and anyone who loves life on the reef.
May is an awesome month with warm water, cooler weather and reduced numbers or tourists. A perfect time to plan your reef trip :)
