Backroads Trail

Backroads Trail Your adventure starts here! Turn off the highway, open your eyes to the charms of the Backroads Trail

Welcome to our region - an area pivotal in Australia’s
development. The Backroads Trail, with its signposted
interpretive sites, allows you to see how we have lived
on and shaped this land from Dreamtime prehistory to the
present day. The Backroads Trail weaves together the themes
of heritage, environment, food, wine and culture in an
informed and user-friendly way. You’ll not only stand on the
si

tes where history was made - you’ll be delighted by small
businesses all along the way offering you delicious produce,
a comfy bed for the night, and extra attractions such as
stunning sculptures, leafy bushland walks and relaxing river
cruises. You need to get off the highway to see us - but we
will open your eyes.

🚗 Backroads Stop: Womboota Wonders 🌿🍷

If you're cruising along the Backroads Trail, make sure you pull into the charming village of Womboota – a hidden gem bursting with local flavour and rustic charm.

🫒 Pericoota Olives – Nestled amongst the gum trees, this family-owned grove produces premium extra virgin olive oil and table olives. Taste the passion in every bite, have a chat with the growers, and take home some golden goodness for your kitchen.

🍷 The Old School Winery & Meadery – Once a schoolhouse, now a haven for handcrafted wine and traditional-style mead. Relax under the verandah with a glass in hand and enjoy the peaceful country surrounds. It’s the perfect spot to sip, savour, and slow down.

This is a lovely surprise! Big thank you to Sophie Baldwin for the article on how we have regenerated our wetland and whole farm over the last 18 years.

Also big thank you to the Country News for putting us on the front page for their Ag Focus 2025 edition which was most unexpected. We would have dressed up a bit more if we had of known!

🪵 Sculpture, History & River Views – A Must-Stop on the Backroads Trail 🌿

When travelling the Backroads Trail, be sure to stop in at Barham and Koondrook and take a leisurely stroll along the Redgum Statue Walk, winding beside the Murray River through both towns. Along the way, you’ll discover a stunning collection of chainsaw-carved sculptures, each telling a story of the region’s rich timber milling history and the pioneer spirit that shaped this part of the world.

🪓 Carved from local red gum by internationally renowned artists Kevin Guilders and Angela Polglaze, these striking works of art celebrate the pioneer men and women of the district as well as the iconic native wildlife that call this region home.

It’s a walk filled with history, craftsmanship and natural beauty.
