Here are some of my sabastopols enjoying what is left of the late summer here at Peel Ridge. I will start sorting them into small breeding flocks soon, ready for spring.

Here are a few Camden White–Mottled Toulouse Ganders I’m using to improve head structure, neck strength, and keel development in the ganders of my Camden White Toulouse flock. This is a bloodline I’ve been developing to introduce into the Camden Whites at Peel Ridge Stud.
Producing high-quality birds takes patience and time—there’s always something to refine and adjust along the way. I often say buy quality to breed quality, but it works just as well the other way around: breed quality to sell quality.
I feel bad sometimes that I am not able to answer any questions put out in comments straight away. I expect there may be quite a few on this topic. Please keep in mind I rely on my daughter to handle all posts and replies, and with four kids keeping her busy, we usually wait until there are several questions before responding with one detailed reply to cover everything.

A few shots of the Peel Ridge Camden White Toulouse enjoying the last of the warm weather. This season I’ll be focusing on strengthening the flock, with particular attention to fertility and hatchability. To support that, I’ve created a new bloodline to introduce. more posts on this to follow.
As these birds continue to grow to impressive sizes, these are the kinds of factors that really matter when aiming to maintain a high standard across the flock. You might notice a few of the girls still drying off after a late bath, wings out and catching the air. Clearly no one told them there was a photo shoot today.

Some Photos of Peel Ridge Studs African geese. I have sorted some of my africans into a smaller flock so I could choose a breed pair to enter into the Sydney Royal Easter Show. I will be auctioning off this breed pair, at the shows Poultry Auction. The pair I have put up are 2.5 years old. Have a look at my page to see individual shoots and auction detail.

A FIRST FOR PEEL RIDGE AFRICANS....

For the first time, I’ll be offering a breeding pair of my African geese at the Sydney Royal Easter Show poultry auction .

I bought my first pair of ganders back in the 1970s from Reg Dart, on the recommendation of Roy Hull. At the time, I didn’t even know what breed they were, just knew they weren’t Chinese. No Google, no Facebook, not even mobile phones back then, just a lot of learning over time.

Over the years, I built the flock from three separate bloodlines, one of which I developed myself through outcrossing. It’s been a slow burn project, some years I’ve put plenty into them, other years they’ve just sat in the background.

This pair represents decades of breeding and selection.

✔️ Established Peel Ridge bloodlines
✔️ True to type African geese
✔️ Genuine breeding pair

I was asked; How to improve breeding performance in large geese. Instead of answering in the comments I thought a post might be better as I do get asked this often.

In Australia, we have all the genetics to breed the same quality birds as overseas. The real challenge is numbers. We don’t have the commercial setups to breed at the scale that allows for heavy culling. It’s the quality of the culls that truly shows the development of a breed. If you can afford to cull good birds because you have better ones coming through, you will always make progress.

In any flock there are breeding birds and show birds. 2 really good show birds don’t always make good offspring. My flocks are grown from good-quality geese (females) and ganders that have strong vigour and strength for survival traits. That way, I am breeding flocks that are true to type, but also healthy and less inclined to be affected by disease and climate. There are a lot of things to look for to improve but I do prioritize a good shaped head and strong bone structure in the legs to support a heavy frame.

Flock mating has been a success for me, as it not only allows natural selection for health and vigour, but also improves fertility and hatchability, which is vital for flock development

All packed up from the breeding season for 2025. From Ostriches to emus to geese and ducks, we’ve hatched them all, over the years and every year I say it’s my last. Then spring comes around and I get another “spring in my step” to do it all over again.
