Back in March 1980, just a few months after Cockington Green opened, members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee of the ACT paid a visit to the gardens.

Pictured are Senator John Knight, John Haslem, Ken Fry and founder Doug Sarah inspecting the miniature Ferry Inn on the Norfolk Broads.

The visit was featured in The Canberra Times, highlighting one of Canberra’s newest attractions at the time.

Forty six years later, the Ferry Inn remains a much loved part of the Cockington Green display. 💛

Nearly 50 years ago, Doug Sarah built the Intercity XPT train that still travels around the handmade pond at Cockington Green.

Using plans supplied by British Rail, Doug created the original moulds and built the train from fibreglass. After decades of service, the time has finally come for a replacement.

Now, at 87 years young, Doug is back in the workshop using those same original moulds to build a brand new XPT.

The original bogies and drive system were handmade by Brenda’s father, Bill Rose, an engineer who helped build Cockington Green from the very beginning. Today, Doug’s grandson Christopher is engineering a new bogie and drive system for the replacement train.

Four generations of one family have now played a part in creating, building and preserving Cockington Green.

A pretty remarkable legacy 💛

💗 Today we’d like to show our support to our neighbours Under the Mistletoe in Federation Square at Gold Creek.

We were saddened to hear that founder Jenny has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Jenny and her team are using their experience to help raise awareness and vital funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

If you’re able to, please consider supporting their fundraising efforts. Every contribution helps make a difference.

Hidden within our English village display is a small piece of WWII history.

Back in 1985, David Evans from Prudential Assurance visited Cockington Green and placed a miniature figure outside Rose Cottage in recognition of Prudential’s connection to the real village of Cockington, Devon during World War II.

During the war, many London companies moved staff and operations to safer regional areas away from bombing raids, including parts of Devon and the Torquay region.

The little Prudential gentleman can still be found standing outside Rose Cottage today 😊💛
