We always aim to get to Floriade when the gates open and head straight to the Ferris Wheel before there are any lines.

G for George returning ‘home’ to the Australian War Memorial (AWM).

George is a WW2 RAAF Lancaster bomber that flew 90 missions over Germany, Italy and occupied Europe. More recently he has been one of the major and much loved attractions at the AWM for many decades

George was dismantled and removed from the AWM four years ago to make room for extensive building works including a new ANZAC Hall for him and other large displays.

The first two parts of George were returned to the AWM yesterday with a lot of ceremony and a trip down and up ANZAC Parade and a small crowd had gathered to welcome him back. The remaining parts will be returned in coming months but probably at night.

You will also notice at the start of the video the view down ANZAC Parade over Lake Burley Griffin to the Old and New Parliament Houses and the the view at the end up ANZAC Parade to the AWM at the base of Mount Ainslie

Once he is reassembled and back on public display (early 2026?) I’ll do another post and video.

Post script: i was planning to find a suitably poignant or respectful piece of music to play over the video but then realised that the flock of sulphur crested cockatoos noisily welcoming George back was the best soundtrack possible.

Many Australians will hate me for this post and perpetuating the myth that we have kangaroos in our streets.

But while we wouldn’t see them bounding down the streets in central Sydney or Melbourne they can find their way into the suburbs that are in or around bushland and can come in for a feed on any well maintained lawn. Especially in winter when food is harder to find in the bush.

This is in Jerrabomberra NSW which is a suburb of Queanbeyan very close to Canberra

This big boy also wasn’t interested in me or my dog (on lead) as we walked past within about 10 metres. Tame is not the right word for him as he is a wild animal that could do both me and the dog some serious damage if cornered or threatened. But he was certainly comfortable enough not to be fussed with us as he lives so close to the suburbs.

Anyway we moved on and he got back to eating my neighbour’s freshly sown lawn.

Latest blockbuster exhibition at the National Gallery ‘Cezanne to Giacometti’.

We haven’t been to this one yet but definitely will. And as usual we will absolutely plan to go soon rather than leaving it to the last weeks which are always super busy.

While I was at the Gallery I also got some shots of their latest acquisition for the sculpture gardens ‘Ouroboros’ by Lindy Lee from Queensland. An amazing piece, beautiful in a bright sunny day and also lit up at night.

It cost $14 million, weighs 13 tonne and was transported from Queensland to Canberra by road in one piece. It was one of those logistical transport jobs that would have entailed much travel by night, closed roads and police escorts and permits. Maybe we will see that story on one of those trucking shows one day.

Final shout out to the team with the job of keeping Ourobos clean and super shiny. There is a full time job that I don’t want.

Don’t forget if you are in Canberra for Cezanne to Giacometti, or any other reason, give us a call to arrange a sightseeing or winery tour (Jeff 0427 790 999).

Getting Barry the Ram ready for his next tour.

He is such a big boy that a clean inside, wash and dry seems to take such a long time. But the final result is worth the effort.

As it is getting colder here in Canberra, especially in the mornings the heated seats (and heated steering wheel for me!!) really come into their own.

Keep an eye out for an upcoming post with a video tour of Barry outlining the creature comforts and luxury features.

Australian War Memorial Tour - 23 May

A visit to the AWM is fascinating, educational, and not least incredibly moving.

If you are pressed for time in Canberra you can see the highlights of the AWM in around an hour or you can easily spend most of a day absorbing its displays and memorials and still only really scratch the surface.

Contrasting the Old and New

I never get tired of taking my guests on tours of the Old and New Parliament Houses. So much history, intrigue and of course fantastic architecture.

And to think serious consideration was given to demolishing the Old Parliament House or turning it into a hotel amongst other things. When you see what a national treasure it has become as the Museum Of Australian Democracy (MOAD) you can’t imagine it as anything else.

Our tours are completely customised for you so we can go anywhere you want but I always highly recommend visits to these two beautiful buildings.

Four hour sightseeing tours start at $128pp for a private group of four people.

Australian War Memorial Tour - 23 May

No trip to Canberra is complete without visiting the Australian War Memorial.

Ideally time your visit to conclude with the Last Post Ceremony which is held every day except Christmas Day.

We can include a visit and tour of the AWM with one of our Canberra sightseeing tours or drop you off there at the end of your tour with us and you can explore in your own time.
