We always aim to get to Floriade when the gates open and head straight to the Ferris Wheel before there are any lines.

G for George returning ‘home’ to the Australian War Memorial (AWM).

George is a WW2 RAAF Lancaster bomber that flew 90 missions over Germany, Italy and occupied Europe. More recently he has been one of the major and much loved attractions at the AWM for many decades

George was dismantled and removed from the AWM four years ago to make room for extensive building works including a new ANZAC Hall for him and other large displays.

The first two parts of George were returned to the AWM yesterday with a lot of ceremony and a trip down and up ANZAC Parade and a small crowd had gathered to welcome him back. The remaining parts will be returned in coming months but probably at night.

You will also notice at the start of the video the view down ANZAC Parade over Lake Burley Griffin to the Old and New Parliament Houses and the the view at the end up ANZAC Parade to the AWM at the base of Mount Ainslie

Once he is reassembled and back on public display (early 2026?) I’ll do another post and video.

Post script: i was planning to find a suitably poignant or respectful piece of music to play over the video but then realised that the flock of sulphur crested cockatoos noisily welcoming George back was the best soundtrack possible.

Many Australians will hate me for this post and perpetuating the myth that we have kangaroos in our streets.

But while we wouldn’t see them bounding down the streets in central Sydney or Melbourne they can find their way into the suburbs that are in or around bushland and can come in for a feed on any well maintained lawn. Especially in winter when food is harder to find in the bush.

This is in Jerrabomberra NSW which is a suburb of Queanbeyan very close to Canberra

This big boy also wasn’t interested in me or my dog (on lead) as we walked past within about 10 metres. Tame is not the right word for him as he is a wild animal that could do both me and the dog some serious damage if cornered or threatened. But he was certainly comfortable enough not to be fussed with us as he lives so close to the suburbs.

Anyway we moved on and he got back to eating my neighbour’s freshly sown lawn.
