The phrase โsheโll be rightโ is deeply woven into Australian culture. It speaks to resilience, optimism and a belief that things will work out in the end. But concerns have been raised in the coastal communities of the Limestone Coast that it's this mindset is leading to tragedy.

One local also told Limestone Coast Community News that the men were also warned it wasn't safe to go out that day.
Unfortunately stories like this are not new, with two men drowning and one woman surviving after their boat capsized in the same area in January last year. Police reported that in this incident, two were not wearing lifejackets and one was wearing one, but incorrectly.
The recent tragedy has again forced the community to confront a difficult question: are we too complacent when it comes to safety at sea?

A statement from SA Police said that officers were disappointed to encounter a number of people with non-operational or poorly maintained lifesaving equipment.
"If you canโt remember the last time you checked your lifejacket or had it professionally serviced, itโs time to do it now. Lifejackets save lives, but only if they are in working condition and are worn." they said.

The pattern is painfully familiar. Older men, experienced on the water, heading out without wearing lifejackets. The conditions seem manageable. The trip is routine. And then something goes wrong.

As part of an inquest relating to eight deaths on our state's coasts in just ten months, the coroner made a number of recommendations to the state government around boat safety.
โIt is my sincere hope that highlighting the circumstances of their deaths can bring about positive change and an improvement to the future safety of all those who love and derive pleasure from the sea.โ he said.
For decades, lifejackets were seen as something for those inexperienced on the water, with fishermen and boaters often viewing them as unnecessary. So the challenge lies in how we change a mindset that has existed for generations.
Some experts believe the key is shifting the narrative. Instead of framing lifejackets as a sign of caution or inexperience, they should be seen as standard equipment, no different from a seatbelt in a car.
Others point to the importance of community leadership. When respected local fishermen and boaters wear lifejackets, it helps normalise the behaviour for others.
But cultural change takes time.

The answer is not always simple. But experts agree on one thing - wearing a lifejacket dramatically improves the chances of surviving an unexpected fall into the water, because by the time tragedy strikes, it's often too late to put a lifejacket on.
Perhaps the real challenge is redefining what โsheโll be rightโ means. Because on the ocean, being prepared is often the only thing that makes sure everything actually is right.
