Paestum, near Salerno in Campania, hosts the last remaining Greek ruins in mainland Italy and three of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world. Lesser known and with fewer visitors, it is both enchanting and utterly breathtaking!
Positioned between the temple of Hera and that of Poseidon, the ‘Sand Horse’ by Mimmo Paladino is a contemporary sculpture, about four metres high, depicting the mythological Pegasus and crafted from sand sourced from Paestum’s beaches. Before it became Paestum, the city was called Poseidonia, from Poseidon, the god of the sea and of horses.
