Did you know... most safaris include two game drives a day, timed for when the animals are most active? 🚙

Drives usually head out at sunrise and again in the late afternoon, when it's cooler and wildlife is on the move. You'll be in an open or open-sided vehicle, which means nothing between you and the action and incredible photo opportunities. Animals generally see the vehicle as one large object rather than a threat, so as long as you stay seated, encounters like this one can happen just metres away.

Did you know... near the equator, the sun rises and sets at almost the same time all year round? 🌅

In places like Kenya, you get roughly 12 hours of daylight every day, and the sun drops fast, so twilight is short. That's why sundowners on safari are planned to the minute: blink and the golden hour is gone.

Did you know... lion cubs are born covered in spots? 🦁

These spots help camouflage the cubs in long grass while they're small and vulnerable. As they grow, the spots slowly fade, although some lions keep faint markings on their legs and bellies into adulthood.

Did you know that a leopard can drag prey as heavy as itself up a tree? It does this to keep its meal away from lions and hyenas. Leopards are the most elusive of the Big Five, so a close-up like this is a real safari highlight.

Did you know... the Cape buffalo is one of Africa's famous "Big Five"? 🐃

The term was first used by hunters for the five animals hardest to track on foot: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Today, it's a bucket-list goal for photographers instead. Buffalo are known for being unpredictable, which is why guides treat them with a lot of respect.

Did you know... the white rhino isn't actually white? 🦏

The name is often thought to come from a mistranslation of the word for "wide," describing its broad, square lip, which is perfect for grazing on grass. Look closely and you'll also spot an oxpecker bird on its back, which feeds on ticks and acts as an early-warning alarm.

Flamingos under Kilimanjaro, Amboseli National Park, Kenya.

Did you know that flamingos are born grey-white? Their pink colour comes from their food. The algae and tiny shrimp they filter from the water contain pigments called carotenoids, and the more they eat, the pinker they get. Behind them, Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 m, which makes it the highest mountain in Africa.

Did you know that lionesses do around 90% of the hunting for their pride? They work as a team: some drive the prey forward while others wait in ambush. The females in a pride are usually related too (sisters, mothers, daughters and aunts), and they often stay together for life!
