The sky above Towers Hill exploded in molten gold and violet, casting long shadows over the ghostly silhouettes of 29 WWII concrete bunkers that once stored bombs and ammunition. As the sun sank behind the eucalyptus-clad ridges, I could almost hear the whispers of the 10,000 servicemen stationed here in 1942, their stories now brought to life by interactive audio–visual exhibits inside some of those very bunkers.

Moments like these—where nature’s grandeur meets a hidden wartime legacy—remind me why Charters Towers is pure magic at dusk.
