Our volunteers recently unearthed plenty of local gold knowledge during a famil at Towers Prospecting World, learning about prospecting equipment, where to fossick locally and the stories behind some incredible gold discoveries. We then put that knowledge to the test at ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ '๐ฌ ๐๐ฅ๐จ๐œ๐ค ๐…๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐€๐ซ๐ž๐š. While we didnโ€™t strike it rich this time, we had plenty of fun trying! ๐Ÿ˜„

And when you hear stories like this one, you can understand why we kept lookingโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ† In 1920, long after Charters Towers' major gold mining boom had begun to decline, prospector Tom Ah Hoy discovered the largest gold nugget found on the goldfield west of Charters Towers. Nicknamed the Prince of Wales, it weighed an incredible 143 ounces or 4.45 kg...that's around $800,000 worth of gold today! ๐Ÿคฏ It was later raffled by the Charters Towers District Hospital to raise funds towards the townโ€™s first X-ray machine!. ๐Ÿ’›

Just a friendly reminder that the Charters Towers Visitor Information Centre is CLOSED ๐ญoday, ๐’๐ฎ๐ง๐๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐’๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ, due to scheduled works being undertaken by Ergon Energy.

If you're in of need of a town map or Holiday Guide, you can collect these from the after-hours information box located at the front of the Visitor Information Centre.
