🎓 CBSHS Alumni Spotlight // SGT Steven Graham ✈️
From Clontarf Beach State High School to the skies with the Royal Australian Air Force — we're proud to highlight the incredible journey of Sergeant Steven Graham, an Avionics Technician and CBSHS graduate (1986–1992).
With nearly 40 operational deployments across Australia and overseas — including Iraq and Afghanistan — Steven has shown courage, skill, and leadership in service of our country.
But that’s not all. After retiring as a sprinter in 2015, Steven became an international weightlifter, winning multiple international competitions, including:
🏋️ Bronze at the 2017 Oceania Championships
🏆 Undefeated streak through to retirement in 2025
🥇 2x World Cup & World Championship gold medals
Steven’s journey wasn’t always straightforward. After leaving school in Year 10, working full-time for two years, he returned to CBSHS to finish Years 11 and 12. He credits maths as the subject that truly prepared him for life in the Air Force — and it all started right here.
💬 “You hear a lot that you’ll use maths in the real world — it really is true.”
A proud moment? Being presented with his prefect badges — his first taste of leadership, something that has shaped his military career and personal life.
Now, Steven shares this advice with current students:
“Learn to hear people — not just listen, but really hear them. Set realistic goals and work towards them. Live in the moment. No regrets.”
Steven’s journey is a powerful reminder that success doesn’t always follow a straight line — and that CBSHS builds foundations for futures that take flight. 🛫
