September brings one of the most special stages of the humpback migration. 🐋

As whales make their way south along the NSW coast, mothers may be travelling with calves born in warmer northern waters. The calves have a long journey ahead before reaching the feeding grounds further south.

It’s a very different part of whale season from the faster northbound migration earlier in the year.

There’s a whole side of humpback behaviour happening beneath the surface that we rarely get to see.

All humpbacks make sounds, but scientists believe the long, complex songs are sung by males. The songs are made up of repeating patterns and are heard most often around the breeding grounds.

By September, the southbound migration is underway along the NSW coast as whales begin the long journey back towards Antarctic feeding grounds. 🐋

Those long grooves underneath a humpback whale aren’t wrinkles. They’re ventral throat pleats.
When a humpback feeds, those pleats allow its throat to expand dramatically so it can take in a huge mouthful of water filled with small fish and krill. The water is then pushed back out through the baleen, leaving the food behind.

They’re particularly easy to notice when a whale rolls or breaches and shows its underside. 🐋

August may be wrapping up, but whale watching on the Coffs Coast certainly isn’t. 🐋

The southbound migration continues into spring, bringing another stage of the humpbacks’ annual journey along the NSW coast. As the season progresses, there is also the chance of seeing mothers travelling south with their calves.

Whale Watch Experience cruises continue into early November, weather and sea conditions permitting.

During a low fluking dive, the upper surface of the tail remains visible as the whale slips beneath the water. It’s one of the smaller behaviours you start to notice once you spend time watching whales.
