We all love our BUSH STONE-CURLEW in the Redlands and beyond so let's show it...🥰

Scroll past the easy choices, the typical crowd favourites everyone knows..
- give our long-legged, slightly crazy CURLEW your vote in the AUSTRALIAN BIRD OF THE YEAR Competition!! 😄

Day 2: Curlew made the first elimination, keep.up.the effort! We can do this, all together !

Read the rules, keep the link, it's a simple click to vote - but VOTE DAILY, share to your friends, make the whole family vote CURLEW 😤 Let's do this, Redlands!!

It's a tough competition🥺 and the curlew is much less known and barely seen in the southern states - they don't even know what they are missing, especially at night! 😅
Public post to make this easy to share

It’s time to get behind your favourite – from little penguins to (very big) cassowaries, every bird has its fans. Vote early and vote often (within the rules) in the 2023 Guardian/BirdLife Australia poll

Of course there are bush stone-curlews in other areas of the Redlands, including on the other islands, but maybe the speed limit of 40km/h and the fact that people on Coochiemudlo seem to be particularly besotted with this peculiar, lovely bird💚, makes Coochie a true curlew sanctuary 😌
In any case, if you want to observe them a bit closer (respectfully of course) or take photos.. you can't really miss them on Coochiemudlo 😄

ONE ISLAND IN MORETON BAY IS SAVING THE DAY FOR BUSH STONE-CURLEWS

You will be very lucky to find a Bush Stone-curlew in the southern Australian states these days, but on one island in Moreton Bay the residents are holding onto their much cared for Bush Stone-curlews. In the gardens of Coochiemudlo Island, Bush-stone Curlews are thriving thanks to the care and support of the Islanders. Unlike flocks to the south, the Bush Stone-curlews on the Island are a stable population of about two hundred and have remained at about that number for more than 10 years now. In fact, the island is a nursery for other island flocks and for the Redlands and Greater Brisbane region. It seems that the carrying capacity for the island has been reached and stabilised. Every year some young birds are pushed off the island by the older resident Curlews to find a home elsewhere.

It’s the beginning of the breeding season just now and at this month’s island Curlew survey many of the pairs were nesting. They usually lay two eggs, but most pairs manage to successfully raise just one chick to adulthood. Many pairs will attempt a second nesting in a season.

Findings from the long-term QWSG conservation study of the island’s Curlews were published this week and can be accessed here:
