Warden John Michael Finnerty formally named the town site, drawing from the area's deep roots. The name "Coolgardie" is derived from the Aboriginal name โ€œKurl-Kurtiโ€, which refers to a specific type of Mulga tree that grew near a local waterhole. This vital waterhole was originally shown to the first Europeans in the area by Nyunbuning, bridging the land's ancient history with its new future.

Following the historic discovery of gold by Arthur Bayley and William Ford just a year earlier, this official declaration set the stage for Coolgardie to blast onto the map. It quickly grew into a bustling hub of over 15,000 people, earning its legendary title as the "Mother of the Goldfields."

Today, we look back at the incredible heritage and the shared history that shaped our region. Happy official birthday, Coolgardie! ๐ŸŽ‰

Life on the early goldfields was filled with triumphs, but it also held immense heartbreak on this day. In the early days of Coolgardie, Bertha Finnertyโ€”wife of the town's prominent Resident Magistrate and Mining Warden, John Finnertyโ€”tragically passed away from pneumonia at the Coolgardie hospital. She was only 38 years old.

As the Warden's wife, Bertha was a central figure in the early social fabric of the town, making her sudden loss a deeply felt blow to the pioneering community.
