A hungry little fella down at Boat Harbour Beach today 🐝

Did you know a single Xanthorrhoea flower spike is actually made up of hundreds of tiny flowers?

These towering spear-like flowers provide a valuable food source for bees, other insects and nectar-feeding birds.

Clever adapters to the Australian landscape, these plants are also remarkably resilient to fire – with many species flowering prolifically after a burn.

In parts of Deep Creek where the Feburary 2026 bushfire hit hardest, the Xanthorrea can be seen thriving in great numbers.

Just one of the smaller sights to keep an eye out for along the Southern Ocean Walk!

How it must feel to have zero responsibilities… 🐬

Almost every day, a pod of bottlenose dolphins makes an appearance at Boat Harbour Beach, often surfing in the swell just below our walkers.

If you’re lucky, you might catch a performance from some of the Fleurieu Coast’s biggest show offs.

One of the prettiest little locals found along Southern Ocean Walk: the Melaleuca decussata (aka Cross-leaf Honey-myrtle, or Totem Poles).

Native to South Australia, this shrub flowers in soft pinks and purples before transitioning into a pale white.

The fluffy-looking heads are made up of tiny individual blossoms that produce a sweet nectar. It’s no surprise they’re a favourite among bees, butterflies and other pollinators!

Keep an eye out for this beautiful native in its brightest bloom over spring – pictured here above Boat Harbour Beach.

Meet Barry: co-founder and lead guide of Southern Ocean Walk.

After 32 years on the Fleurieu Coast, he still says the best part of the job is getting to share this extraordinary place with others.

Swipe to get to one of the great faces behind the walk! 🩵

One last fun fact: off the trail, Barry loves music from all over the world — especially Latin America! So we thought it only fitting to soundtrack his introduction with one the greats.
