"I wasn’t born here, but more than 30 years ago Shark Bay quietly claimed me anyway. I’ve never quite found the words for the feeling, only that every time I come over the hill and see those turquoise waters, something deep and calming settles in me, and I just know that I am home.

I find the whole carving process to be hypnotically soothing. I put some music or the ABC radio on and entire afternoons can disappear. My husband has started referring to himself as a β€˜whittling widow’!" - Tam 2026

Tam has a Business Degree and is a second Dan Black Belt but has always been drawn to her more creative side. She has long been involved in all kinds of arts practices, but it is the captivating beauty of Gutharagudu/Shark Bay that has helped inspire her latest work

πŸ’₯By the Bay 2026 Artist - Matthew Taverniti πŸ’₯

Over the past five years Matt has taught himself the art of airbrushing as a hobby. His art style is focused on capturing a sense of realism in depictions of marine life, landscapes and portraits. Matthew’s art practice has been largely private up until now, with By the Bay representing the first public exhibition of his airbrushed works.

β€œI used to come up to Shark Bay as a kid and I’ve always loved it here, so having an opportunity to work and live here was definitely a no-brainer for me. I fell in love with the Bay for its rugged scenery, red sand, and crystal clear water, and the freedom to adventure with all of it right at my doorstep.

I started learning how to airbrush using my uncle’s airbrushing kit that I found in the automotive workshop where I work. For me it’s my way to relax, find mental clarity and be creative while learning new skills.

Being a spray-painter by trade has helped the process, from understanding colours to colour matching. My artworks are done with an airbrush using a mix of water-based colour, fluorescent colour, thinner-based and automotive base coats on aluminium composite sheet metal. The three artworks I’ve created for By the Bay are a reflection of all the creatures I’ve seen, and why I love Shark Bay the most.” - Mathew Taverniti, 2026

✨ 'By the Bay' 2026 Artist - Bianca McNeair ✨

Bianca is a Malgana woman, Mother and Grandmother, from Gutharagudu/Shark Bay whose work caring for Sea Country has spanned several different cultural, conservation and political roles. An artist and curator committed to sharing language and culture, she has produced projects for galleries and museums across Western Australia that draw attention to women’s issues and climate change. She has also worked in coordinating ranger programs and leading Malgana Women’s Loggerhead Turtle monitoring and seagrass restoration projects, linking scientists, traditional owners and the local community.

β€œMalgana Mothers come from the first mothers to give birth on this country. We are as beautiful and strong as our Country and carry ancient knowledge and connection to it like turtles carry their shells. Mothers before me have kept our knowledge strong. πŸ’«'By the Bay' 2026 Artist - Sally Capewell πŸ’«

Sally is a multidisciplinary emerging artist based in the Mid-West region of Western Australia. She began her artist journey drawing and painting, but over time found herself drawn to making and experimenting, frequently combining multiple techniques including stitch, print, weaving and painting. Her practice is defined by an interest in transformation, sustainability and material experimentation.

Working with recycled, found objects and organic matter, she creates artworks that reimagine the familiar, giving new form and value to materials that have already lived a previous life. Each piece created is part experiment, part discovery, and part reflection of her own eclectic personality. Sally continues to take every opportunity offered to her to continue her artistic journey.

By the Bay is a creative development program for Shark Bay’s visual artists living in or with close connection to Shark Bay. From dabblers to professionals, across all mediums we invite you to express your interest to be part of the By the Bay 2027 exhibition ~ celebrating creativity inspired by our remarkable region.

Supported by professional artists’ fees, skill-building and mentoring opportunities, this program can help you grow your craft and share your work. Creatives of all levels of experience are encouraged to apply. Expressions close Wednesday 30th September.

Lauren Greatorex

Lauren Greatorex is a proud Malgana, Nyikina, and Jabir Jabir artist whose work is deeply inspired by her cultural heritage and connection to Country. As a visual storyteller, she uses her art to honour the traditions, landscapes, and histories of her people, creating intricate pieces that reflect the strength and resilience of Aboriginal culture. Working across various mediums, Lauren blends traditional symbols and contemporary techniques to produce artwork that is both visually striking and rich in meaning. Her practice is heavily influenced by the natural beauty of Gathaagudu (Shark Bay) and the Kimberley, where the ocean, sand dunes, and rugged terrain serve as constant sources of inspiration. Lauren’s work often explores themes of identity, kinship, and the enduring bond between people and place. She draws on stories passed down through generations, embedding cultural knowledge into each piece to ensure that these narratives continue to be shared and celebrated.

Joey Yorke is a Western Australian artist who has lived at Ocean Park Aquarium south of Denham for the past nine years. Joey’s childhood was spent on her family’s farm in Brookton and travelling the State’s coast with her parents and siblings, with photography, art and crafts playing a significant role in her youth. Moving to Shark Bay to be closer to her partner Ed, she fell in love with the coastal lifestyle and the raw beauty of the land and ocean. She now spends weekends camping, diving, kite surfing, fishing, exploring, and drawing inspiration from these ocean adventures with her partner and three young children.
