What a fantastic day we had, we visited Ididaride owned by the Seavey family. Champion dog sledders and have several winners of the Iditarod 1000 mile dog sled race held in March every year. This race is a huge test of Endurance and Stamina for both the musher and the dogs. LED by a team of 16 dogs the fastest can do this race in around 8 days, with temperatures often at 50 below zero and with very little rest or sleep. At designated check points,dogs and humans are checked over by doctors and vets to make sure they are fit to continue. Dogs not fit are left behind for the vets to take care of and sometimes the mushers finish the race with only 8-10 dogs. I have never seen an animal enjoy what they do more than these dogs, they get so excited when they have their harness put on.

This is the final stop on our Alaskan cruise. We have visited 4 ports along the way including Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait. We stopped to look at Hubbard Glacier from the ship before sailing to Seward. Most of these places are only accessible by boat or air and some only by boat or seaplane. What an adventure this is.

Next stop on this Alaska inside passage tour is Sitka, the largest land mass city of the USA, while the population is only around 8500 people, it is a huge island. Again the salmon are spawning here and the bear population is quite big. Once a Russian/American island it was purchased by America in the late 1800's. St Michael's Russian Orthodox Church sits high in the centre of downtown Sitka. Tourism plays a huge part in the economy of Sitka, mainly the cruise industry bringing hundreds of thousands of passengers each cruise season.
