Chuan and I have spent 4 days out in the ocean chasing black marlin. First day we blanked, second day we raised 6 and he landed one and dropped one, third day we raised 7 and he hooked and dropped one, today we raised just one and it ate the fly perfectly.
Well done to Chuan for getting his second black on fly. It’s awesome to have such variety in our fishery, when the flats are cold and quiet, there’s blacks not far offshore #blackmarlin #marlinonfly #marlin #scientificanglers
After a couple of quiet spells over the last week, Exmouth regular Chuan and I have finally managed to land a good fish.
We raised 5 black marlin today, he hooked two and landed a very nice one. His second marlin on my boat and his biggest too. A great day ! #marlin #blackmarlin #marlinonfly #catchandrelease
Couple captures and releases with Steve Starling from an awesome day on the water. Giant herring are such a bonus species on the flats, I got one that almost jumped clear into the boat #flatsfishing #sightcasting
A mesmerizing feather star making its way through the water, feeding on micro organisms as it moves along
Cathie landing and releasing her magnificent permit from yesterday. Pure emotion !
Lunchtime is one of my favorite times of the day, not only do we get to eat delicious and healthy food, I also use the opportunity to have a quick cast myself.
Cathie hadn’t ever seen a permit up close before so she asked me to try catch one and also to show her the techniques of the cast, strip etc ..
I don’t need to be asked twice and lo and behold, as we sit down for lunch, two perms swim past, so I quickly grabbed the rod that was prepped and ready on the back of the boat, and made a back cast, dropping the crab fly right in the path of one of the fish.
Just like that it casually swam straight up to the fly and engulfed it, it was almost surreal in the glassed off conditions. Thanks also to Cathie for landing my fish and well done in touching your first perm. The next one is yours 😉
Persistence is key when targeting challenging species of fish.
Cathie and I spent three days in the open ocean fly fishing for billfish, it’s long hours of patience interrupted by insane moments of adrenaline when a marlin hits the teaser.
Day one we raised 7 marlin and a sail, Cathie hooked two marlin and the sail but all came unbuttoned. Day two we raised another three but none ate, day three we raised two and Cathie went on to land her first marlin on fly, becoming the second female angler to ever land a marlin on my boat.
Here it is, enjoy the emotion of the capture.
Cathie with one of her goldens, I just love the different coloration and marking on each of these fish.
This one was swimming with a bunch of queenies and ate a small Alflexo crab that was left to sink below the marauding queens to where the goldens were.
First day back on the water after the holidays and it’s a warm welcome to Exmouth regular Col Merriman.
Over the years Col and I have landed numerous amazing captures together, big GT, blue and brown bastards, permit, cobia, tuna, mackerel, brassy and golden trevs, sailfish and a stack of queenies.
Milkfish and marlin have eluded us so far, hopefully we can change that over the coming days.
A quiet morning inshore today with cold and pesky winds to start with, but once it calmed down the afternoon turned it on with a nice sailfish on fly within half an hour of being out there.
Sand crab
Ever seen permit staring at the bottom wondering what they're doing?
Now you see it, now you don't. A speckled sand crab burying himself in the sand, the ultimate defence from hungry fish.
A lot can be learned from the behaviour of this little guy.
Mackie and Golden double
Great action with a double hookup for Rod Wentworth and Charles on spanish mackerel and golden trevally.
A shark chased the mackerel into the air and then came straight at the boat and took a bite of my electric motor, listen to the bang as it hits.
With an aggressive shark around it was either get them in quick or risk bringing just a head in, or even loosing the whole fish.
Good angling by the guys and some fancy footwork around the boat by me trying to keep on top of everything, it was a win being able to get both fish to the boat.
The teeth marks on the electric motor should buff out
Chuan releasing his black marlin 👍
That’s dinner sorted for a few days. Had a quick overnighter on my neighbor’s boat deep dredging flies, this Spanish Mackerel was a blast on the 10wt
Yesterday’s solo mission saw me do 100km in the boat and take 2 hours to get home thanks to an incorrect forecast.
Tides were ideal for the area I was fishing but the wind came up and tried to ruin the fun, I was having none of it and persisted until this guy came swimming past.
Trophy permit in 20 knots of wind 👍.
Thanks Ben Dyson for the crab fly 👊
After 10 thousand hours on the water in Exmouth, yesterday I experienced a first.
I noticed a commotion and headed across to find Orcas in the Gulf. I stayed with these 4 for about half an hour before my researcher mate Toddy Cetrec WA arrived with a film crew.
We watched them intercept and attempt a predation on a humpback calf which lasted about 20 minutes then they swam off uninterested.
What an experience!
