NSW Rural Women’s Gathering The 2025 NSW Rural Women's Gathering will be held in Lismore on Saturday 25 October. Stay tuned for more details!

The NSW Rural Women's Gathering is an annual weekend event organised by local committees with support from the Rural Women's Network. The organising committee makes key decisions, develops a theme and the weekend program. Each Gathering reflects the unique culture, industry, tourism and environment of the host community. Women's Gatherings are for ALL rural women including: farming women; Aborigin

al women; women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; mining women; women in the fishing industry; women who live in regional cities, towns and villages; and coastal women. Over the course of the weekend you will experience inspiring speakers, stimulating workshops, lively entertainment, scrumptious food and the opportunity to connect and form friendships with a diverse range of people from all different locations and backgrounds. Gatherings are a well established annual statewide community event for all rural women, so come along and enjoy a wonderful weekend - there is something for everyone and all women are welcomed with open arms!

🌟 Guest Speaker Spotlight: NSW Women's Safety Commissioner Hannah Tonkin 🌟

We’re honoured to welcome Dr Hannah Tonkin, the inaugural NSW Women’s Safety Commissioner, to the 2025 Rural Women’s Gathering in Lismore. ✨

Since her appointment in 2023, Commissioner Tonkin has led the whole-of-government response to domestic, family and sexual violence. Her career includes roles as an international human rights lawyer with the United Nations, as Director of Disability Rights at the Australian Human Rights Commission, and as a barrister in London and Adelaide.

Commissioner Tonkin also chairs the NSW Multi-Sport Coalition - a groundbreaking partnership between sport, government and community launched earlier this year. The Coalition brings together leaders from professional clubs, state sporting organisations, industry and government, all committed to challenging the drivers of gendered violence and promoting gender equality through sport. ⚽🏉🏏

At the Gathering, Commissioner Tonkin will share insights on how initiatives like the Coalition, alongside other community-focused approaches, can harness the power of connection to help create safer communities for all. 💜

We are honoured to welcome Shanna Whan AM as the keynote speaker for the 2025 NSW Rural Women’s Gathering in Lismore on Saturday, 25 October.

Shanna is the powerhouse behind Sober in the Country, a grassroots charity changing the narrative around alcohol in rural Australia.
Named winner of the 2022 Australian of the Year (Local Hero category) and freshly appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2025, Shanna’s raw and deeply personal story of overcoming alcohol addiction - and her subsequent decade of advocacy for others who battle hard times in isolation - has saved and changed countless rural and regional lives.

At this year’s Gathering, Shan will be sure to inspire and give each of you something practical to take home to your own communities.

The Sober in the Country message is not focused on 'preaching prohibition' but on teaching social inclusion and how we can all play vital roles in creating better futures.

The theme, “Connect to the Heart,” couldn’t be more fitting. The Rural Women’s Gathering invites women from across regional, rural and remote NSW to come together for a day of connection, inspiration and empowerment.

The Gathering will feature enriching workshops, cultural experiences and a lineup of inspiring speakers, including Madeleine West and Mel Bampton.

There’s one week left to submit your Expression of Interest to host the 2026 NSW Rural Women’s Gathering applications close at 11:59 PM on Thursday, 3 July 2025.

If you’ve been thinking about applying but haven’t quite hit submit, now’s the time to pull it together. Hosting the Gathering is an incredible chance to put your town on the map, showcase your local pride and bring women from across regional, rural and remote NSW together to connect, share stories and build something unforgettable.

We’re looking for a host community with heart and we know there are so many of you out there.

The Gathering is a celebration of rural women their resilience, creativity, leadership and the unique role they play in our regions. And every year, it’s different because it reflects the place and people that host it.

You don’t need to have all the answers right now if you have a passionate organisation, a strong idea and a community that cares, we can work with you to build the rest. We’re here to support you through the application process and beyond.
