No longer available for short term rental- Base Camp is our Huon Valley weekender listed on AirBnB.The house has been completely rebuilt to modern standards behind its original 1890 shopfront in the picturesque Tasmanian river town of Franklin. The house is cosy with a heatpump in the livingroom and bathroom, and the main living space is open and warm. You will be a short walk away from: the histo
ric Palais Theatre, which hosts a Sunday produce market, regular music events and a monthly $5 classic film screening; 2 pubs; an organic grocer; cafes and restaurants, including fresh local seafood and the best pizza in the Huon Valley; antique and vintage stores; Frank's Cider Bar (with free live music on Sundays); barefoot bowls on a Friday night; and the Wooden Boat Centre. You can also walk across the road to catch a cricket or Australian Rules Football game at the local club, or watch the rowers from the Huon Rowing Club (home of the Olympic “Oarsome Foursome”) train and compete. The backyard is fenced and would accommodate a small dog. Franklin was established as "The Settlement" by Lady Jane Franklin in 1839. It has a fascinating history as the original agricultural trade and shipping hub of the Huon Valley. Prior to European settlement the area was home to the Melukerdee Aboriginal people of the Huon River, who regularly moved from the river wetlands to the surrounding hills. We acknowledge them as the traditional custodians of this land, and pay our respects to their Elders past, present, and emerging. On your way to Franklin you can stop at one of the many roadside produce stalls for locally-grown fruit and vegetables. While based in Franklin, you will be in easy reach of: the famous Masaaki`s Sushi in Geeveston; The Honey Pot visitor centre in Huonville; Willie Smith's Apple Shed (bar, kitchen, museum and music), between Huonville and Mountain River; the Red Velvet Lounge in Cygnet; the historic Ida Bay Railway; the Tahune Airwalk; and some of Tasmania's world-renowned wilderness at nearby Weld Valley or the Hartz Mountains National Park. We love Franklin as it still has a village feeling whilst being close enough to Huonville for amenities (doctors, large supermarkets, etc.). You could easily dedicate a week to Franklin and fill it with daytrips to surrounding towns and sights in the picturesque Huon Valley - the food bowl of southern Tasmania. We hope you love our Franklin weekender, and come to love the Huon Valley as much as we do.
