We are participating in Talk Like a Pirate Day on the 19th September. Childhood Cancer Support provides families with free short-term and long-term accommodation, fully equipped with everything they need, as well as food, transport and counselling services. We take away the added stress and burden so that families can focus on their child. All funds raised will go towards building a new accommodation village close to the hospital to help support more families.

We’ve added a new bus route to Taste the Tamar! 🚌

If you’re coming from George Town, Hillwood or Beaconsfield, we’ve made getting to Taste the Tamar a whole lot easier.

Our new bus service will pick up in George Town at 11am, with stops at Hillwood and Beaconsfield, and take you straight to the Exeter Showgrounds.

And after your day of fun, the bus will head back to George Town at 6pm, stopping at Beaconsfield and Hillwood along the way.

If you're in the Bell Bay and George Town areas (including around the Tas Ports facility) on Monday and Tuesday this week you may see an increased police presence and hear loud bangs.

Please don't be concerned - it's planned training.

🦅H5 bird flu update

Six positive detections of H5 bird flu, including two positive detections in the north and north east, have been confirmed overnight, bringing the total number recorded in Tasmania to 25.

The new detections include a crested tern at Lulworth, a crested tern at Scottsdale, two crested terns in Burnie, one crested tern at Sea Elephant River on King Island, and a little penguin at Grassy on King Island.

There have been no detections in Tasmanian poultry, and chicken meat and eggs remain safe to eat. NRE Tas continues surveillance and response activities across the state.

Reporting by members of the community helps inform our surveillance and response.

Reporting and testing helps show where the virus is and whether cases are linked within Tasmania or are from interstate sources.

Keep pets such as dogs and cats away from sick or dead wildlife. Keep cats contained. When walking dogs, keep dogs on a lead and observe no dog zones.

If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife:

✅AVOID contact.
✅RECORD the location and, if safe, take photos.
✅REPORT it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

A trip to Low Head is just the beginning.

Spend the day making your way along the Tamar Valley, stopping in at wineries, farm gates, cafés and riverside towns before finishing at the historic Low Head Lighthouse as the sun dips below the horizon.

Along the way you'll find lookouts, wildlife experiences, fresh local produce and plenty of reasons to take the long way around.

📢 Temporary Closure Notice
The George Town Visitor Information Centre will be closed from 1:00pm Thursday July 22. We will be back open on Monday July 27 from 10:00am. Then closed again from 12:00pm Tuesday July 28. We will be back open on Thursday July 30 from 10:00am. Thanks!

Cottage 2, Low Head Pilot Station
Monday 20 July 2026 – September 2026

Following extensive fire damage, restoration works at the Low Head Pilot Station Cottage 2 site will begin on Monday 20 July 2026.

The project will be delivered in two stages. Stage one works to reconstruct the cottage roof are expected to be completed in September 2026.

The cottage site will remain closed to the public until all works are completed.

The Low Head Pilot Station and Museum remain open to the public seven days a week.

Please comply with directions from staff or any signs if you are in the area.
