Israel remains a deeply desired destination for global travelers, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors who continue to explore its historic sites, vibrant culture, and unique landscapes. Newly released official data reveals that 65.7 thousand visitors arrived in Israel during the month of May 2026. The vast majority of these arrivals, totaling 64.4 thousand, were tourists planning overnight stays to fully immerse themselves in the country, while an additional 1.3 thousand visitors arrived for shorter day trips.

The recent influx adds to a steady stream of international travel documented since the beginning of the year. From January through May 2026, Israel has successfully hosted a total of 356.4 thousand global visitors. Tourism demographics show a diverse mix of nationalities, with travelers from the United States making up the largest share at 35.2% of all entries. Visitors from France represented 10.7% of the total, followed closely by the United Kingdom at 7.7% and Russia at 5.5%, highlighting a sustained and widespread global interest in the region.

Current travel patterns have experienced notable adjustments due to the ongoing security situation and the influence of Operation “Lion’s Roar,” which commenced on February 28, 2026. While overall figures are lower compared to the 126.8 thousand visitors recorded in May of last year, the continuous arrival of tens of thousands of tourists reflects the resilient nature of Israeli travel and the deep connections visitors feel to the land.

For most Australians who grew up in the 1950s and 60s, Sunday meant church. It meant hymns, community, and a shared set of values that shaped how neighbourhoods looked after each other. How much has changed? 👇

Should Australia always protect its Christian heritage as part of who we are?
Walk through any Australian town, large or small, and you will find the evidence everywhere.

A sandstone church on the main street built by the hands of early settlers. A hospital founded by a religious order that has been caring for the sick for over a century. A school established by missionaries who believed every child deserved an education. A charity that has been feeding the hungry and housing the homeless long before any government program existed to do it.

Christianity did not just influence Australia's past. It built much of the physical, social and moral fabric that this country still relies on today.

For Australians of your generation, this is not an abstract historical point. It is lived experience. Many of you were baptised in those churches, educated in those schools, cared for in those hospitals, and raised with values of compassion, honesty, hard work and looking after your neighbour that came directly from a Christian tradition that ran deep through Australian life.

Those values did not belong only to churchgoers. They became Australian values. The fair go. Mateship. Caring for those who cannot care for themselves. These ideas have Christian roots even when Australians who hold them have never set foot inside a church.

But Australia is changing. It is becoming more diverse, more multicultural, and more secular than at any point in its history. The 2021 Census showed for the first time that less than half of Australians identified as Christian, a dramatic shift from the Australia of even thirty years ago. Church attendance has declined. Religious instruction in schools has been reduced in many states. And public debate increasingly treats faith as a private matter rather than a shared foundation.

For many Australians, particularly those who have watched these changes unfold over a lifetime, there is a genuine concern that something important is being quietly set aside. Not just a religion but a heritage. A history. A set of stories and values and institutions that shaped this country and deserve to be honoured and preserved even as Australia grows and changes.

Others argue that a modern multicultural Australia must make room for all traditions equally, and that no single faith should be privileged in the public square, even one with deep historical roots.

Both perspectives come from a genuine love of this country and a genuine concern for its future.

The question is not whether Christianity should be forced on anyone. It is whether the heritage, the history, the institutions and the values that grew from it deserve to be recognised, respected and protected as a proud and permanent part of the Australian story.

For the generations who built this country, that question matters deeply.
