Yet while the line travels through some of Britain's most magnificent countryside, it was once threatened with closure. In the 1980s, there was a proposal to close the line but thousands of people - and one dog - objected.

The line starts in Leeds and passes through Shipley and Skipton, but it is the section between North Yorkshire and Cumbria that is world-famous for its views.

Rail has existed in Indonesia since Dutch colonial times. However, most of the rail development concerns only Java Island, the rest of the archipelago remaining neglected except for a small rail portion in North Sumatra and South Sulawesi. The most recent investment has been for the only high-speed train line linking Jakarta to Bandung.

But this is due to change according to Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono. Indonesia is now planning a major expansion of its railway network outside Java, with ambitions to develop 14,000 km of new rail lines across Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi by 2045.
Spread over the 20-year development period, annual funding requirements are estimated at around Rp 65 trillion (US$3.77 billion). The government says rail infrastructure needs remain significant across Indonesia’s three major islands outside Java.

In Sumatra, the current rail network covers around 1,871 km, but an additional 7,837 km is needed to meet rising demand and improve regional connectivity. Kalimantan currently has no operational railway network at all, with minimum development needs estimated at 2,772 km.

Meanwhile, Sulawesi has only around 109 km of rail infrastructure in service, leaving a further 3,284 km required to strengthen interprovincial transport links.
Agus said Indonesia’s rail network remains limited compared to many other countries but stressed this should serve as motivation to accelerate development rather than discourage investment.

Rail transport currently accounts for just 4% of Indonesia’s passenger mobility and only 1% of national freight logistics.

The Rocky Mountaineer has two levels of coaches and service: GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf. Both include all meals and drinks, including B.C. wines as well as beers and cocktails.

Since you don’t sleep on the train, overnight accommodation are included, and you can decide on your hotel package, and whether to upgrade to the Fairmonts. Transfers are included and your luggage is waiting for you in your room when you check in.

SilverLeaf coaches are single-level cars with large windows. Meals are served to your reclining seat, although there are fewer menu choices than GoldLeaf. Two Onboard Hosts, a mix of storytellers, historians, servers and walking encyclopedias, provide the same kinds of services as in the GoldLeaf coaches. The small outdoor vestibule at the rear allows for picture-taking and fresh air, plus there are two washrooms in each car.

I travelled in a two-level GoldLeaf coach. We had more than a half-dozen choices of made-to-order items on breakfast and lunch menus, with meals served on white linen in the 36-seat dining room. There’s a kitchen staffed by three chefs on the main level. Next to the two spacious washrooms at the rear of the car, a short spiral staircase leads to the top level

This iconic rail car features a curved glass dome, providing stunning panorama views of the passing scenery. A pair of large reclining composite-leather seats with adjustable seat warmers (they also pivot for groups of four) are on each side of the aisle, along with a service galley at the front of the coach.

At the rear of the main level, there’s a spacious open carriage with plenty of room for photographers and those who want a closer look at the scenery.
