✨ 👀 Where to look tonight…

If you’re heading out to watch the Lyrids, this is the part of the sky you’re looking for.

Find somewhere comfortable to sit or lie back, head outside away from white lights, and face north-east.

Look for the bright star Vega...one of the brightest stars in the night sky.

Just beside it sits the constellation Lyra, where the meteors will appear to radiate from.

☄️ Meteors can streak across any part of the sky, but this gives you your starting point.

Give your eyes 10–15 minutes to adjust… then simply look up and enjoy the show.

🌌 Happy meteor hunting ✨☄️

✨ The sky puts on one of its oldest recorded shows tonight…

The Lyrid meteor shower (observed for nearly 3,000 years) returns, lighting up our skies with fast, bright streaks of ancient cosmic debris.

Each meteor is a fragment of Comet Thatcher, a “dirty snowball” that orbits our Sun every 422 years (next visit: 2283).

As Earth moves through its debris trail, these particles ignite in our atmosphere… creating the shooting stars we see overhead.

🌌 When to look: After midnight (best around 2:00am)
🌙 Conditions: No moon tonight and tomorrow; ideal dark skies
✨ What to expect: Up to ~20 meteors per hour
🔭 Where to look: North-east, near Lyra (look for Vega)

But this is just a glimpse of something much bigger… ☄️🌠

With another spectacular event just weeks away; the Eta Aquariids, created from the remnants of Halley’s Comet, arriving early next month.

Join us for our upcoming Public Astronomy Night Experience:

☄️ Cosmic Fireworks: Meteors, Comets & Asteroids 🌠
An immersive guided astronomy night exploring meteor showers, comets, and the dynamic forces shaping our solar system.

Step outside.
Let your eyes adjust. 👀
Look up… and take a moment to connect with something timeless.

🌌 We look forward to welcoming you and embarking on an educational and memorable night exploring our Galaxy and beyond...✨

📣✨ Event Status Update – Tonight’s Public Astronomy Night ✨🌧️

As much as we would like to proceed with tonight’s event, we have been carefully watching the sky and the weather forecast.

The cloud to the south-east is solid and there are patchy showers moving through ☁️🌧️, which unfortunately means visibility will be very limited this evening.

We always wish to present you with a great night of astronomy 🔭✨ and at this stage, the conditions simply won’t allow us to deliver the experience you deserve.

🌟 Tonight’s event has been postponed to tomorrow night:- Saturday, 1 March 2026.

An email will be sent to all guests shortly outlining your ticketing options and next steps.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We look forward to welcoming you tomorrow night for a memorable night under the stars exploring our galaxy and beyond... 🌌

🌟 Australia’s Australian of the Year for 2026: Astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg 🇦🇺🚀

Space engineer and astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg 👩‍🚀 has been named Australian of the Year 2026, recognised for her exceptional contributions to space science, engineering, and STEM education.

Katherine made history as the first Australian to qualify as an astronaut under the Australian flag, completing her training at the European Astronaut Centre and continuing to play a leading role in the future of human spaceflight.

Her work champions curiosity, technical excellence, and scientific thinking... reminding us that exploration always begins with a simple question: “What’s out there?” 🌠

✨ We can’t think of a more inspiring role model to highlight as we launch our first Public Astronomy Night of 2026, where we’ll be looking ahead to humanity’s return to the Moon and exploring the wonders of our southern night sky.

🚀 Big News for Australian Space‼️

Gold Coast–based Gilmour Space Technologies has secured a $217 million AUD Series E funding round, jointly led by the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation (NRFC) and Hostplus, with participation from the Future Fund, Blackbird, and others — lifting the company’s valuation beyond $1 billion and making it Australia’s first “space unicorn.” 🇦🇺🌌

Founded right here on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Gilmour is building the Eris orbital rocket, developing satellites, and operating Australia’s only licensed private orbital spaceport in Bowen, North Queensland... positioning our nation for sovereign access to space.

This kind of investment reflects growing confidence in Australia’s space capability, advanced manufacturing, and rocket technology. It reminds us that space isn’t just distant stars… it’s happening right here at home. 🚀🌍

🌟 Curious about how rockets reach orbit?
Come and join us at our first Public Astronomy Night of the year... where we’ll explore space, science and the future of human exploration under the night sky:

🧱🚀 Happy LEGO Day! 👩🏽‍🚀🧱

LEGO Day is celebrated each year on 28 January, marking the founding of LEGO and celebrating creativity, engineering and learning through building... A perfect fit for space exploration 🌌

These NASA-inspired LEGO builds were put together by John, our local and experienced amateur astronomer here at Gold Coast Astronomy, and feature:

🌕 LEGO NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander: humanity’s first steps on the Moon

🚀 LEGO NASA Apollo Saturn V: the rocket that made the Apollo missions possible

🚀 LEGO NASA Artemis Space Launch System (SLS): the next-generation rocket set to carry astronauts back around the Moon

From Apollo to Artemis, the story of going back to the Moon continues, and we’ll be exploring that story at our upcoming public astronomy night:

On Wednesday night, 20 January, we braved the late hours and were rewarded with something truly rare 🌌✨

Following a powerful geomagnetic storm triggered by solar activity ☀️🛰️, the Aurora Australis (the Southern Lights) became visible far further north than usual, even here in Queensland 🇦🇺

For a short window around 8:00 pm, the aurora was visible to the naked eye, a remarkable sight at our latitude 👀🌠

Events like this don’t happen often. They require the right solar conditions, strong interactions with Earth’s magnetic field 🌍🧲, and a little patience under dark skies 🌑✨

Being able to witness and photograph (mobile phone) the aurora so far north is something we won’t forget anytime soon.

Moments like these are why we do what we do: observing, learning, and sharing the night sky 🔭🌌

And there’s so much more to the story behind what causes displays like this…

If you’re curious to learn more, we’ll be exploring the science of auroras (and safely observing the Sun ☀️👓) at our upcoming special Public Astronomy Event:

☀️ Saturday, 21 March 2026🌈

“Solar Afternoon & Southern Lights: Equinox Special”

Safe solar viewing followed by a discussion on how auroras are created and why events like this occur.
