Today, 3 June, marks Mabo Day - a significant day in Australia's history and a time for reflection and recognition.

On this day in 1992, the High Court of Australia handed down the landmark decision in the Mabo case, led by Torres Strait Islander Uncle Eddie Koiki Mabo, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a deep and enduring connection to the land. This ruling overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius and laid the foundation for Native Title in Australia.

Mabo Day invites us to honour the courage, determination, and legacy of Eddie Mabo and all those who continue to advocate for truth, justice, land rights and reconciliation.

On Anzac Day, we pay tribute to all who have served in defence of this country. First Nations men and women have stood strong across every chapter of Australia’s military history — from early conflicts on home soil to peacekeeping missions today. Despite enduring exclusion and injustice, their courage and commitment continue to shape our national legacy.

'On the battlefield, everyone was equal. Aboriginal and white Australians fought side by side. But any equality was stripped upon the return home. Attitudes are not changed. Aboriginal people were still subject to discrimination. They couldn’t go into a bar to have a beer with mates. Their kids and they couldn’t go into swimming pools etc. Aboriginal people could die for their country but it would be more than 20 years after the war before they could even vote.'

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 STAR FRIDAY! From Christoph!

"We had an amazing experience at Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre! Our guides, Kailen and Keeley, were fantastic, and Kailen is one of the best storytellers we’ve ever heard. The Dreamtime stories were so captivating—we could have listened for hours.

This is our first time in Australia, and honestly, it made us a little sad that it took three weeks of traveling before we really got to connect with the true history of this country. It often feels like Australia’s official history starts with the arrival of the First Fleet, but there is such a rich and deep history long before that.

We truly hope that places like Jellurgal help bring more awareness to this important part of Australia’s past. It’s an experience we won’t forget and something we’d highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about the incredible culture of the First Nations people of the Gold Coast."

Our Story

Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre is the first of its kind in operation, exclusive to the Gold Coast. It has been authorised and established by the traditional land owners of the Gold Coast and supported by the parent organisation Kalwun Development Corporation. Jellurgal boasts a wide range of activities, governed by its proximity to the Burleigh Headland which truly was the focal point in Aboriginal lifestyle pre-contact. With daily guided tours, educational facilities, gift shop and art gallery and refreshments including tea, coffee and cakes, Jellurgal is the perfect place to re-connect with Jarra “Mother Earth” and unwind.
