🌊 Fairy Tern Breeding Update from Birdlife Australia 🐣
has shared some wonderful news from the Murray Mouth Fairy Tern breeding site - and it’s a big win for these endangered coastal birds!

💛 on 10th Feb, a second banding event was conducted by David Paton, Adelaide University researchers and Birdlife Australia, with 53 Fairy Tern chicks banded at the site.
🪺 on 27th Feb, Birdlife Australia also hosted a Beach-nesting Birds Workshop with women from the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Coporation (NAC). The workshop focused on how to monitor breeding Fairy Terns and Hooded Plovers.
🎉that same afternoon an incredible 77 fledglings we’re observed - marking the most successful breeding event at the site in many years. This large number of fledglings is an encouraging sign for the future of this endangered species!
🌅 on the 7th March, a follow-up survey was conducted, initially it looked as though the birds had moved on, until a small group was discovered about 1km further along the beach. This group included 14 adults, 6 fledglings aged 21-25 days, and 6 ‘runners’ (aged 10-20 days), still grounded and very vulnerable.

Three toes. Deep prints. Who left their mark on the Coorong? 👣 Take a guess before you swipe ➡️

🌿Found meandering across the dunes, these large, three-toed tracks are a classic sight in the Coorong.
They’re usually seen nibbling on a native currant or two, and can run up to 50km/h with their powerful legs.

👣Defined by the three large forward-pointing toes with no heel mark, often walking in zig-zag or straight lines across the open ground.

They belong to Australia’s largest bird… The Emu!

💡Fun fact: male emus will incubate the eggs and raise the chicks solo!

📍These tracks were spotted near Tappawar (Barkers Knoll) but we spot them all over the Coorong open scrub and sandy trails.

Almost had a last minute passenger jump on board our Murray Mouth Cruise! 🦭
As the warmer months draw to a close, seals who spent their summer breeding off the Pages and Kangaroo Island are starting to return to the protected waters of the Coorong National Park. With seal numbers already on the rise in the Coorong, it’s a sure sign that breeding season is wrapping up! 🥰
