THIN SOLES AND WET WEATHER!

Here is an existing clients horse recently diagnosed with thin soles in both front feet from Vet radiographs.

This time of year the wet season brings increased humidity and rain - which can cause the callus soles to gradually erode on rough ground, leaving the horses soles thin and sensitive.

Thin eroded soles can present in both shod and barefoot hooves. In this case the horse is shod. I used a rubber pad with impression material between the hoof and pad to give cover whilst the callus sole rebuilds. Impression material helps to give complete surface area contact from the ground to the solar foot surface, also stops gravel getting stuck under the pad.

With this treatment, in most cases horses become sound with in 1-5 days.

Here is a pair of glue on aluminium front shoes I have previously shared at insertion. Back story - We decided to use the glue on shoes to avoid nailing shoes onto the sensitive acute laminitic hooves to give the feet 4-5 weeks for inflammation settle in time and lift the sore soles off the ground to allow the horse to walk comfortably and in doing so promote blood flow and heeling.

Now that’s has successfully played its course, the glue on fronts held on for 5 weeks. I have put the horse back into steel front shoes as we planned. Happy and sound 👍🏼👍🏼🐎

Here is a perfect patient named Sugar; She had some acute laminitis in her front feet - I decided to go with glue on shoes to avoid nailing onto the currently sensitive feet and to lift her soles off the ground and give her some relief from sole pressure. Great result with a now comfortable pony 👍🏼👍🏼

We are into the wet season up here in Sunshine Coast. Thought this job was worth sharing.

Superficial hoof wall fissures (tiny flakey splits) can appear from range of reasons, but one main cause is the increase in wet weather and heat / humidity.

Hoof wall fissures left untreated like this horse in the photos can make for a long, intense recovery. I started working with this horse and found the deep fissure which had deepened into a complete toe crack.

How did we resolve this?
-The hoof wall crack required resection of necrotic hoof wall.
-Artificial support of the hoof capsule.
-Stable confinement, a dry environment free of mud and moisture.

This horse rebounded incredibly well due to the support and effort from the owner and family. 6 shoeings from start to finish on a 5 weeks shoeing cycle.

Please contact me for an appointment if you need help with your horse seedy toe, fissures, seperation, white line etc. It’s an expensive lesson to learn the long way around.

Recently working along side Damien from Mary River Vet on a hoof wall resection to expose and treat an affected area of laminae causing long term reoccurring hoof abscess(‘s).

As you can see from the photos before the hoof wall resection, there a two previous abscess blowouts both in line with the horn tubules which have stemmed from the affected area of laminae.
