Sometimes the best discoveries are just a short detour off the highway.

Nigretta Falls sits only 20km from Hamilton, a volcanic-based waterfall fed by the Wannon River, and it has a character all of its own. Take the stairs down to the base of the falls and find yourself standing at the foot of something genuinely spectacular. It's the kind of place that feels a little like a secret, even when you're standing right in it.

Winter is the best time to visit, when the water is flowing at its most powerful, but honestly, any time of year has its own quiet magic here.

For photographers, the afternoon light is your friend. As the sun sets behind the waterfall cliffs, the results are remarkable. Bring your camera and take your time.

Easily accessible by 2WD and caravan-friendly, with a picnic ground, public toilets, electric barbecues, ample parking and multiple fishing spots on hand. The kind of place you can settle into for a few hours without a plan.

What a warm, good-humoured afternoon with the Hamilton Country Music Club. From the first chord, the room settled into that easy rhythm the club is known for - relaxed, welcoming and full of familiar faces alongside first-time visitors.

The performers brought a wonderful mix of classic favourites and original songs, creating an enjoyable afternoon of live music. It was great to see musicians supporting one another, sharing stories between songs and joining in on harmonies and lead breaks. The audience was just as much a part of the experience, with attentive listening, generous applause and a genuine sense of community throughout the afternoon.

The next gathering will be held on Sunday, 27 September at the Hamilton Golf Club. Whether you're keen to perform or simply enjoy an afternoon of great live music, it's well worth adding to the calendar.

When set off on the Mount Abrupt (Mud-Dadjug) trail, they captured something that words don't always do justice. The ridgeline views, the wind at the summit, the kind of quiet that only comes when you're well and truly out in it.

Mount Abrupt is a 6.5km return trail, climbing roughly 460m with around three hours of walking at a comfortable pace. It is challenging, but every step is worth it.
