Renowned contemporary artist Sally Gabori (c.1924–2015) from Bentinck Island is known for her bold depictions of sea country. Now her youngest daughter, Amanda Jane Gabori, 59, continues the legacy, painting both her parents’ Country, including the scales of her totem animal, the river rock cod Dibirdibi. Born in Biella in the Northern Province of Piedmonte, Raffaella would often travel to Paris or Milan, epicentres of the fashion world. It was a trip to Lucca in Tuscany that would change everything.

As much as I aspire to wear a cute bikini or pour myself into a smooth pair of leather pants, I don’t think I’m going to wear them well. Staying real is ok. I like to prove that you can be and wear whatever you like with good styling and a touch of flair.

For River Lonie, growing up in a football family – his father Nathan played AFL for Hawthorn and Port Adelaide, his uncle Ryan played for Collingwood, and cousin Oscar is also making his mark in the sport – meant footy was never just a weekend activity. "I was naturally drawn to footy and then also sort of forced to do it, but I loved it either way," River laughs.

Running from 28 June to 31 August 2025, the Sorrento Art Prize (SAP) will feature works from 60 shortlisted artists selected from over 1,000 national applications, including five talented artists from the Mornington Peninsula, with one outstanding artist to be awarded a life-changing $125,000 prize.

The opening weekend kicks off on Saturday, 28 June at 2:00pm with a free public event that includes the official award announcement. The celebration continues into the evening with the SAP Gala Party at 7:00pm, with tickets available through the official website: www.andgalleryaustralia.net.
