The Champagne Pools are cut into ancient basalt rock at the northern tip of K'gari and every wave that breaks over the edge at high tide fills them with bubbles. It's also the only safe ocean swim on the entire island.

75 Mile Beach is an official Queensland road; so you need a vehicle permit, you're subject to actual speed limits, and yes, aircraft land on it regularly. It's roughly 120km of hard-packed sand that shifts with every tide, meaning the road you drove in on doesn't quite exist on the way back.

Why is the water in Lake McKenzie so blue?
It comes down to two things; what's in the water and what isn't.

Most lakes get their colour from sediment, minerals, and organic matter. Lake McKenzie has none of that. It's a perched lake, fed entirely by rainfall with no rivers in or out, sitting on a bed of 99.8% silica sand. That means there is nothing to interfere with how light moves through it.

That silica sand reflects blue light rather than absorbing it. Combined with water that clear, you get that saturated, impossible colour.

There are only a handful of perched lakes like this in the world. Most of them are right here on K'gari.
