🌿 Toilet upgrade update at the Heyfield Wetlands 🌿

We wanted to share a clear update on the toilet facilities project at the Heyfield Wetlands and to thank those who have already supported this work.

Some time ago, the Committee set out to build new external toilet facilities at the Wetlands. While the need was clear and widely supported, approval to construct new buildings on the land was not able to be obtained. As a result, that original plan could not proceed.

Rather than abandoning the project, the Committee has worked through a practical alternative and is now moving forward with a renovation and reconfiguration of the existing toilet building.

The updated plan will:
• add two additional toilet cubicles
• improve the layout of the existing larger toilet room
• increase capacity and accessibility
• address public health, dignity and environmental concerns

Importantly, one of the toilets will be an accessible toilet, with external access from outside the building and a timed lock operating from sun up to sunset, ensuring toilet access for everyone even when volunteers aren’t able to staff the Information Centre.

We would like to sincerely thank Heyfield Traders & Tourism, who have already contributed a significant amount toward this project. We also want to acknowledge and thank everyone who previously donated toward toilet facilities and have helped us get to this stage.

As with most community infrastructure projects, there is still a funding gap to deliver the full upgrade. We are continuing to pursue grant opportunities and welcome community support where possible.

Today is World Wetlands Day 🌿

Wetlands are some of the hardest-working ecosystems on the planet. They filter water, reduce flooding, store carbon and provide critical habitat for birds, frogs, insects and native plants.

The Heyfield Wetlands are a living example of this in action. Quiet, resilient and incredibly important to the health of our local environment and community.

Today is a great day to pause, learn a little more, and appreciate what we’re lucky enough to have right here.

Heyfield, brace yourselves… the donut truck is rolling in tomorrow night 🍩🔥

Imber’s Donuts are setting up at the Wetlands 6–9pm and they’re bringing the full lineup — Kinder, Toblerone, strawberries, choc drizzle, the whole delicious chaos.

🎣🌈 Rainbow Trout Released at Heyfield Wetlands! 🌈🎣

Just in time for the school holidays, ready-to-catch rainbow trout are being stocked into Heyfield Wetlands as part of the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Family Fishing Lakes program. This is funded by recreational fishing licence fees and the State Government’s Go Fishing Victoria and Boating Plan to get more people fishing, more often.

🐟 Perfect for Families & Beginners
The stocked rainbow trout are advanced yearlings — suitable to be caught straight away. They’re a great option for children and first-time anglers because they’re relatively easy to catch and take a variety of baits and lures.

✨ Tips for Young Anglers
🎣 Lures — Try 6lb line tied to a Tasmanian Devil, spinner, or minnow-style hard-body lure. Cast far and wind back in.
🪱 Bait — Use 6lb line with a running sinker rig. PowerBait from tackle shops or Kmart works well, or simply dig up some worms from the garden.

♿ All-Access Fishing Pontoon
Don’t forget we have a specially designed fishing pontoon so kids, families and those with mobility needs can cast a line safely and easily.

🛒 Need Supplies?
Fishing gear and bait are available locally from Timberline General Store Heyfield, so you can stock up before you cast a line.

📜 Licences & Limits
– Most people aged 18–70 need a Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence (RFL). Exemptions apply for under 18s, over 70s, and some concession holders.
– Short-term and annual licences are available.
– A daily bag limit of 5 trout applies, with only 2 allowed to exceed 35cm.
