The 'Mel Meter'
Many electromagnetic field (EMF) detectors utilised in the field were not originally designed for paranormal investigations. They were typically developed to identify wiring issues or measure magnetic fields to assess potential health risks or locate electrical wiring within walls. While contemporary equipment tailored specifically for paranormal research has emerged, the Mel Meter has remained one of the most recognised devices over the past decade. What many may not realise is the poignant story behind its creation.
Gary Galka, the inventor of the Mel Meter, is an electrical engineer and the owner of DAS, a company specialising in the development of data measurement instruments, including the K-11 device. On 24 September 2004, Gary experienced a personal tragedy when his daughter Melissa was involved in a severe car accident, sustaining life-threatening injuries. On 28 September, her family faced the heartbreaking decision to remove her from life support. She was just 17 years old.
Following her passing, the family reported experiencing what they described as 'after-death communications' (ADC). They observed phenomena such as the television turning on by itself, lights flickering, and interference with various electrical devices around the house. They also reported smelling her perfume and subsequently feeling her hugs and kisses.
Six months later, Gary commenced exploring the paranormal. He read extensively and watched television programmes on the subject, conducting his own EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) recordings. He believed he was hearing Melissa’s voice through these recordings and compared them with messages stored on her phone. During this period, Gary identified a gap in available equipment designed specifically for spirit communication.
In response, he developed the Mel Meter 8704. The name 'Mel' honours his daughter Melissa ('87–'04). The device measures temperature and electromagnetic fields, with some versions incorporating a REM POD. DAS subsequently expanded its product range to include additional paranormal investigation tools, becoming a leading supplier of equipment such as the original K11 meters and PSB7 Spirit Boxes. Whether detecting spirits or electrical activity, the Mel Meter remains one of the most widely used tools in the field, and it is personally one of my favourites.
Gary continues to develop specialised devices for paranormal research and still speaks about the ongoing visits he believes he receives from Melissa.
