Thank you to everyone who attended Runnymede’s four-hour investigation tour.

It was a truly enjoyable evening. As always, Runnymede delivered a compelling experience, including notable paranormal activity such as rempod responses, K2 fluctuations, audible footsteps, and sensations of being touched.

We look forward to reviewing Shannon’s findings from Spirit Seeker Paranormal, with Michelle from Step Into The Past With Van Diemen's Land History Tours compiling all the names identified from the spirits observed during the event.

We look forward to the next investigation.

The 'Mel Meter'
Many electromagnetic field (EMF) detectors utilised in the field were not originally designed for paranormal investigations. They were typically developed to identify wiring issues or measure magnetic fields to assess potential health risks or locate electrical wiring within walls. While contemporary equipment tailored specifically for paranormal research has emerged, the Mel Meter has remained one of the most recognised devices over the past decade. What many may not realise is the poignant story behind its creation.

Gary Galka, the inventor of the Mel Meter, is an electrical engineer and the owner of DAS, a company specialising in the development of data measurement instruments, including the K-11 device. On 24 September 2004, Gary experienced a personal tragedy when his daughter Melissa was involved in a severe car accident, sustaining life-threatening injuries. On 28 September, her family faced the heartbreaking decision to remove her from life support. She was just 17 years old.

Following her passing, the family reported experiencing what they described as 'after-death communications' (ADC). They observed phenomena such as the television turning on by itself, lights flickering, and interference with various electrical devices around the house. They also reported smelling her perfume and subsequently feeling her hugs and kisses.

Six months later, Gary commenced exploring the paranormal. He read extensively and watched television programmes on the subject, conducting his own EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) recordings. He believed he was hearing Melissa’s voice through these recordings and compared them with messages stored on her phone. During this period, Gary identified a gap in available equipment designed specifically for spirit communication.

In response, he developed the Mel Meter 8704. The name 'Mel' honours his daughter Melissa ('87–'04). The device measures temperature and electromagnetic fields, with some versions incorporating a REM POD. DAS subsequently expanded its product range to include additional paranormal investigation tools, becoming a leading supplier of equipment such as the original K11 meters and PSB7 Spirit Boxes. Whether detecting spirits or electrical activity, the Mel Meter remains one of the most widely used tools in the field, and it is personally one of my favourites.

Gary continues to develop specialised devices for paranormal research and still speaks about the ongoing visits he believes he receives from Melissa.

What’s is the story behind your favourite piece of equipment.

Just a little info surrounding Halloween.

Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of summer and the harvest, and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. The Celts believed that on the night of Samhain, the border between the living and the dead became blurred, and spirits would return to Earth. To ward off ghosts, they built large bonfires and wore costumes, often made of animal skins. Over time, the holiday was influenced by Christianity, particularly with the observance of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2), and evolved into the modern celebration we know today.

Celtic origins
Samhain: The Celtic festival of Samhain was celebrated in the region of modern-day Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France around November 1.
End of summer: It marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, the "dark" half of the year.

Supernatural beliefs: The Celts believed the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was thinnest on this night, allowing spirits to come to the mortal world.

Traditions: People lit bonfires and wore costumes, often animal heads or skins, to scare away malevolent spirits.

Thoughs on this.

Fear of the unknown

One of the primary reasons people believe in ghosts is the fear of the unknown. Human beings have a natural tendency to seek explanations for things they do not understand. When faced with unexplained phenomena, attributing them to ghosts provides a sense of closure and understanding.
